Grace Van Brunt Breaks 10 & Under 50 Back NAG Record in Clearwater

10-year old Grace van Brunt of the Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team has broken a 10 & under National Age Group Record in the 50 backstroke this weekend at a meet in Clearwater, Florida. Van Brunt swam a 32.85 in finals of the long course meters meet kno0wn as the World Championship Trials Qualifier. That dips .02 seconds under the record set in 2008 by Californian Ella Eastin in the same event.

Eastin, you will recall, is having a whale of a meet of her own this weekend. At the California High School Southern Section Division 3 Championships, Eastin swam a 1:55.1 in the 200 yard IM, which broke the National Independent High School Record in the event.

This swim is less than a tenth-of-a-second drop from her previous best time swum two weeks ago, as she was already closing in on this record.

Her only other entered swim this weekend is in the 100 back, where her best time of 1:14.72 is a bit further off of the record (about 5 seconds away from Elizabeth Beisel’s mark).

We weren’t able to pin down van Brunt’s exact birthday based on the USA Swimming times database, but it’s sometime in the next month or so.
