As with many meets, the final night of competition at the U.S. Open saw more notable scratches than previous nights.
Three big names – Nate Germonprez, Erin Gemmell, and Michael Andrew – scratched their only events, thus concluding their weekend. The former two athletes swim at the University of Texas, the host venue of the meet. Andrew, who trains in Arizona, has not competed in any finals sessions in Austin.
Germonprez made massive waves in the swimming world in November by dipping under 50/1:50 in the 100/200 yard breaststrokes, becoming the fastest midseason 100 breaststroker ever. He’s carried that success over to the long pool, taking 5th in the 100 breast with a new best time and hitting a 2:13.10 lifetime best in the 200 this morning to get 3rd. His meet will end on that good note, as he is not slated to swim it again tonight.
Fellow Austin trainee Erin Gemmell also scratched her only event: the 100 free. The Olympian placed 15th this morning with a 55.65.
Apart from Germonprez, the only A-final scratches came from Wolfpack women Leah Shackley and Erika Peleaz. They both scratched one event to focus on another.

Carol Capitani sending Erin Gemmell towards the path to irrelevance.
Isn’t she recovering from an injury?

Didn’t even realize Andrew was at the meet!
He didn’t either.
