Futures Finalist Abigail Gowern Chooses Northeastern For 2025

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Distance freestyle and medley specialist Abigail Gowern has committed to swim for Northeastern University this fall. Gowern is from Hooksett, New Hampshire, where she attended Manchester Central High School and trained with Phoenix Swimming (NH).

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Northeastern University. I’d like to thank my teammates, coaches, parents and my big sister for their endless support. GO HUSKIES ❤️🖤”

In February, Gowern secured two titles at the 2025 NHIAA Division I Championship (SCY), winning the 200 free (1:53.02) and 500 free (4:55.61). Her time in the 500 free remains a lifetime best.

Gowern earned the High Point Distance award at the NE CS SCY New England Senior Meet in December, posting several best times. She claimed victory in the 1650 free (16:43.37), finished 3rd in the 1000 free (10:05.28), 4th in both the 500 free (4:56.40) and 400 IM (4:25.46), 8th in the 200 fly (2:10.45), 9th in the 200 free (1:51.75), and 12th in the 200 IM (2:07.39). All were personal bests except for the 200 fly, where she set her lifetime best during prelims with a 2:05.55. Her time in the mile qualified her for U.S. Junior Nationals.

Gowern has also performed well in long course events. In 2024, she was a finalist at the Futures Championship in Minneapolis, placing 8th in both the 800 free (9:10.28) and 1500 free (17:36.58).

Top Yard Times

  • 200 Free – 1:51.75
  • 500 Free – 4:55.61
  • 1000 Free – 10:05.28
  • 1650 Free – 16:43.37
  • 200 IM – 2:07.39
  • 400 IM – 4:25.46

Northeastern placed 4th out of nine teams at the 2025 Women’s Coastal Athletic Association Championships. Gowern has the potential to contribute significantly to the team’s distance group and also brings strength in the 400 IM. Her times in the 500, 1000, 1650 freestyle, and 400 IM all would have ranked 2nd on the team last season. Her 500 free time would have qualified for the ‘A’ final, and her mile time would have placed 3rd overall at the conference championship.

Gowern will head to campus this fall alongside fellow recruits Cece Traub, Alex Fuller, Sophie Bromley, Marea Li, Rory Keller, Eliana Auerbach, Alex Campion, and Siena Griffiths. Auerbach (4:59.31) and Griffiths (4:59.33) also bring strong times in the 500 free.
