Fordham Sweeps St. Francis Brooklyn, Rounds Out Regular Season

Bronx, N.Y. – (February 2, 2022) – The Fordham swimming & diving team sent off their senior class in style on Wednesday night, posting a complete sweep of St. Francis Brooklyn as well as a men’s win over Wagner College at the Messmore Aquatic Center.

The Fordham women posted a 164-72 win over St. Francis Brooklyn to complete an undefeated season in dual meet action for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The men’s team also topped the Terriers, 137-80, while also downing Wagner, 173-28.

Leading the charge for the men on Wednesday were Spencer Clarke and Alex Wilhelm, who each won two individual events and were on a winning relay.  Clarke won the 50 (21.39) and 100 (46.36) freestyle, and joined with Kevin ZaharievVitalis Onu, and Nicholas Chao to win the 200 medley relay in 1:34.72.  Wilhelm placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:44.83) and the 100 backstroke (52.23), and then teamed with Onu, Chao, and Stan Stevens to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.16.

Onu was one of three other men’s event winners on the night, taking the 100 butterfly in 50.69 seconds. Daniel Langlois won the 200 individual medley in 1:56.90 with Diego Perez taking the one-meter dive with a score of 238.35.

In the women’s competition, Fordham won every event with three Rams winning multiple individual event.  Ainhoa Martin took the top spot in the 200 individual medley (2:03.88) and the 100 butterfly (56.07), with Natalie Ortof winning both diving events with scores of 278.77 (1M) and 250.73 (3M).  Emilie Krog also won both distance events with times of 10:26.95 (1000 freestyle) and 5:04.50 (500 freestyle).

Other individual winners included Clare Culver in the 200 freestyle (1:54.48), Madeline Bergin in the 50 freestyle (24.69), Vaula Vekkeli in the 100 freestyle (53.73), Leire Martin in the 100 backstroke (57.14), and Becky Kamau in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.30).

In the relays, it was L. Martin, Kamau, Victoria Navarro, and Bergin taking first in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.97, while Navarro, Jessica Zebrowski, Culver, and Bergin won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:37.54.

The Rams now set their sights on the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held February 16-19 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Men’s Meet

BRONX, N.Y. – The regular season slate for the St. Francis Brooklyn men’s swim team drew to a close Wednesday night as the Terriers traveled to the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center for a battle with Fordham.

The Rams came away with the win in meet, 137-80.

Benedek Lendvai was the bright spot for the Terriers Wednesday night. He scored wins in the 1000y freestyle (9:38.20) and 500y free (4:48.92). Both times are personal bests for Lendvai in dual meets.

The Terriers took the top two times in both distance races. Jedi Morland Janes (9:50.33) scored the silver in the 1000y free, with Elias Hysing (4:46.92) taking second in the 500y free.

It was a tight battle in the 100y breaststroke, as Luka Dmitrovic squeezed out a win (59.30) by just 13 tenths of a second.

Kamil Golenic came within a second of taking first in the 100y butterfly (51.51).

NEXT UP: St. Francis is back in action Feb. 22-26 as the Terriers compete in the Northeast Conference Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
