For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ethan Wang from Pleasanton, California, has announced his verbal commitment to the admission process at Yale University. He trains year-round with the Pleasanton Seahawks and is set to graduate from Foothill High School in the spring.

He confirmed his commitment on social media, writing:

I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Yale University to continue my academic and athletic career! I would like to thank my parents, coaches, and teammates for their endless support. I am beyond grateful to the Yale coaching staff for giving me this incredible opportunity. Go Bulldogs!!!

Wang is a versatile swimmer who specializes in breaststroke, middle distance freestyle, and IM. His first big meet of the 2024-25 season was the Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships in April. His highest finish came in the 200 breast, where he recorded his current career-best of 1:59.10 en route to the win. He also touched second in the 100 breast and 500 free, with then-PBs of 4:27.88 and 56.04, in addition to logging 1:53.96 and 4:00.06 for sixth in both IM events. He also hit the wall at 1:40.22 for ninth and a new lifetime best in the 200 free.

The future Bulldog’s two target meets of the high school season were the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) North Coast Sectional Championships and the CIF State Championships, both held in early May.

At Sectionals, he took on the 500 free and 100 breast, earning runner-up status in the former and fourth in the latter. His times from both events represented personal bests, as he clocked 4:25.32 and 55.59. He was pivotal on Foothill’s relays as well, he led off silver medal winning 400 free relay in 46.80 and notched a 25.82 breast split on the medley relay.

While Wang was unable to match his newly-minted bests at State, he still took seventh in the 500 free worthy time of 4:27.74 in the 500 free. He also produced 56.72 for 26th in the 100 breast and contributed a 45.93 split on the 400 free relay that picked up bronze.

His PB of 1:51.01 in 200 IM stems from a time trial in December, while his 3:58.42 in the 400 IM stems from PC PLS Senior Open.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 Breaststroke: 55.59
  • 200 Breaststroke: 1:59.10
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:40.22
  • 500 Freestyle: 4:25.32
  • 200 IM: 1:51.01
  • 400 IM: 3:58.42

Yale, a Division I swimming program competing in the Ivy League, is led by head coach Jim Henry, who is entering his 14th year at the helm. The men finished third out of eight teams at 2025 conference championship.

Wang is poised to make an immediate impact at the conference level, as his personal best times in the 100 breast, 200 breast, 400 IM, and 500 free would have been quick enough to make the ‘C’ final last season.

On the team itself, Wang would have ranked fourth in the 400 IM, fifth in the 500 free, sixth in the 200 breast, seventh in the 200 IM, eighth in the 200 breast, and 14th in the 200 free. Senior Noah Millard led the team’s standings in the 200 free (1:31.86) and 500 free (4:07.68), while junior Charlie Egeland was the team’s top breaststroker with times of 52.11 and 1:53.74. Sophomore Jake Wang was Yale’s quickest 200 IMer at 1:44.10, while senior Jed Jones‘ 3:47.42 represented the top 400 IM mark.

Wang joins Louis Joos, Burak Iloglu, Cannon Martenson, and Justin Cvetkov in committing to Yale’s Class of 2030.

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
