Day Two Can-Am Open Finals Recap: New American, Pan-Am Records Set

U.S. PARALYMPICS SWIMMING OPEN (2015 CAN-AM OPEN)

The participants of the 2015 Can-Am Open put up a lot of fast swims yesterday, but today was a whole new animal. Canadians Benoit Huot and Aurelie Rivard spearheaded their country’s effort to lead the duel while the Americans boasted new American and Pan-Am records from Robert Griswold and Callie Mitchell. Tonight’s lineup consisted of the Men’s 150m IM, 200m IM, 50m breast, 100m back, 50m free and the Mixed 200m free relay.

Tammy Cunnington posted a 3:47.40 this morning as the sole competitor in the women’s 150m IM while China’s Zhipeng Jin Sr. led the trio of men at night at 2:35.77.

Yi Chen’s 2:39.96 (SM10) was the fastest among the women’s 200 IMs and she’s followed closely by SM13’s Martha Ruether (2:40.18) and Sm14’s Ekaterina Kraeva (2:43.39). The men’s 200 IM had a number of standout swims from its ranks. Rudy Garcia-Tolson was a good bit off his 2012 American Record but he dropped a 2:39.08 for the SM7 class and Timothy Hodge, who’s just fourteen years old, swam his race in 2:24.99 to win the SM9 class. Neptune Natation’s Benoit Huot (S10) would have claimed the fastest time overall at 2:18.80 but Japan’s Dai Tokairin (S14) hit first at 2:17.31.

In the women’s 50m breast, UASC’s Amy Nelson hit first out of the thirteen swimmers at 41.61 with Samantha Tubbs nipping at her heels at 42.06. The men had a spirited race going on their side of the event. James Leroux finished the one-way sprint at 33.14 for the SB9 class, Darvin Baez Eliza of Puerto Rico finished second overall at 33.95 as the solo SB12, and Japan’s SB11 athlete Keiichi Kimura rounded out the top-three spots at 34.26.

In addition to lowering her S2 class 50m back American Record down to 1:24.39 yesterday, Cassie Mitchell recorded the first ever S2 American Record in the 100m back this morning with 3:11.03. Aurelie Rivard of Canada defended her top seed by throwing down a 1:13.05 (S10) for the event’s top time while LOYO’s Elizabeth Smith followed closely behind with a 1:14.24 (S9).

Robert Griswold of Carson-Newman University already reset his S8 100m back American Record and registered a new Pan-Am Record this morning, but he knocked off .44 in finals for a pair of faster records at 1:05.48. Andre Brasil Sr. and Huot battled it out for another finals showdown and this time it was Brasil on top, 1:01.82 versus 1:03.41.

Mallory Weggemann and Morgan Bird finished the 50m free with a pair of 32’s and Rivard and Chen would do the same with their 28’s. Rivard shaved off 1.18 seconds from this morning to post the women’s fastest 50m free in 28.44. Brasil dropped over four seconds off his prelims time to post the men’s fastest 50m free at 24.19. Canada’s Zack McAllister controlled the S8 field with a 28.47 and Japan’s Takuro Yamada peeled off a quarter of a second to win a deep S9 class in 26.96.

London Aquatic Club capped the second day of the 2015 Can-Am Open with their winning time of 3:13.02 from Adam Purdy, Danial Murphy Sr, Valerie Drapeau, and Cunnington in the Mixed 200m free relay.
