UIC had numerous event winners and a plethora of top-three finishes in a three-way dual meet Friday night. Felix LaFortune, Luke Hutchinson, and Danny Sivak all won multiple events to lead the Flames’ men to a 158-141 win over Cleveland State. Cydney Liebenberg and Lily Culp were double winners for the women, who topped CSU 206-91, and defeated IUPUI 183-117.
Both Flames squads remained undefeated at UIC Natatorium. The 206 points put up by the women against the Vikings was a season high.
Event Winners – Men
- Felix LaFortune was a double winner on the diving boards. He set a season high and NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 308.5 on the 1-meter board. He also surpassed the zone mark on the 3-meter board with a score of 325.95.
- Luke Hutchinson won the 1650 free by over 20 seconds. He also won the 200 fly.
- Jacob Cunningham was the winner in the 200 free.
- Danny Sivak won the 100 back by a full second. His margin of victory in the 200 back was smaller, but still comfortable at three-tenths.
Event Winners – Women
- Cydney Liebenberg won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for the third straight meet. Her scores of 293.55 and 288.75 respectively both exceeded the NCAA Zone standards.
- Ashton Amerman won the 1650 free.
- Victoria Thor took the 200 free in 1:56 flat.
- Lilly Culp won the 200 fly by 1.6 seconds. She also won the 200 IM.
- In the 100 fly, Emily Sullivan swam to victory.
- Lauren Johnson was the 100 free winner.
- Christina Neri led a Flames sweep in the 500 free.
Top Performances – Men
- Andrew Lewarchick had second-place finishes on both diving boards, and Ryan Murphy was third twice to give UIC two diving sweeps.
- Josh Dellorto was third in a tightly bunched 200 free. He took second in the 100 free.
- Bryce Wyma, Owen Zant, and Frank Errichiello went 3-4-5 in the 100 back.
- Ben Gabbey took second in the 100 breast.
- Kyle Lewarchick placed third in the 200 fly and second in the 200 IM.
- After swimming 500 yards, Jacob Cunningham was second by just 0.02 seconds. Hutchinson was third.
- Sasia came in second in the 100 fly.
Top Performances – Women
- Christina Neri took second in the 1650 free.
- Maddie Hawker was the runner-up in the 200 free.
- Anna Scovill came in second in the 100 back and third in the 200 back.
- Poleena Kovalaske finished second in the 100 breast.
- Lauren Johnson and Gabbie Werner were second and third in the 50 free, within three-hundredths of a second of each other.
- Ashton Amerman, Hawker, and Thor were second through fourth, behind Neri, in the 500 free.
Relays – Men
- In the 200 medley relay, Danny Sivak, Ben Gabbey, Gabriele Sasia, and Jeff Wiedoff combined for a first place finish.
- Sivak, Bryce Wyma, Eric Weng, and Wiedoff held off Cleveland State to win the 200 free relay.
Relays – Women
- Anna Scovill, Poleena Kovalaske, Emily Sullivan, and Lauren Johnson started the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.
- Gabbie Werner, Johnson, Beth Kelzer, and Kovalaske wrapped the meet with a 200 free relay win.

UIC’s women completed a 4-0 weekend, while the men fell victim to a Cleveland State comeback, in a triple-dual meet at UIC Natatorium Saturday.
Double event winners Cydney Liebenberg and Maddie Hawker paced the Flames women to wins over IUPUI and Cleveland State. Their margins of victory were over 50 points against both Horizon League rivals. UIC’s men led by eight points with only two events to go. The Vikings used the 400 IM and the 400 free relay to rally for a six-point win.
“This is the best women’s team I’ve had in my time at UIC,” Tim Loeffler said. “We don’t have a superstar like a Brie Hines or Lexie Joy, but we’re so deep. On the men’s side, we were a little shorthanded today. We tried to build momentum early and have that carry us through the meet, but we just ran out of steam at the end.
“Credit to Cleveland State, though. There’s a reason they haven’t finished lower than second [at conference] in many years.”
Overall, UIC went 5-1 in the triple-dual meets contested over two days. The full team will compete at home only once more, on January 25. The UIC Diving Invitational will take place February 1.
Event Winners – Women
- Cydney Liebenberg overcame a sub-30 score on her first dive to win the 1-meter event. Despite the slow start, she still posted an NCAA Zone-qualifying score, her fourth of the season. After a foul and a score of just 14.00 on one 3-meter dive, she likewise rallied to win that event.
- Maddie Hawker was the winner in the 1000 free and the 500 free.
- Misha Neal took first in the 200 free.
- Anna Scovill won the 100 back.
- Emily Sullivan had the fastest time in the 100 fly.

- Felix LaFortune set a season high of 348.95 to win the 3-meter event. His 1-meter season high, 315.00, was good for first in that event.
- Kyle Lewarchick was the winner in the 200 free.
- Danny Sivak took top honors in the 100 back and 50 breast.
- Bryce Wyma was the winner in the 50 back.
- Jacob Cunningham won the 500 free.
Top Performances – Women
- Maya Molldrem turned in a season high on the 1-meter board, and was just two points off her best score in 3-meter diving, and was second in both events.
- Victoria Thor was second in the 1000 and third in the 500.
- Emily Sullivan was second, Lilly Culp was third, and Mariah Clemons was fourth, in the 50 fly.
- Lauren Johnson and Poleena Kovalaske finished tied for second in the 50 free. Johnson was also second in the 100 free. Kovalaske had another second place showing in the 50 breast.
- Anna Scovill came in second in the 50 back.
- Lilly Culp was second in the 400 IM, one spot ahead of Ashton Amerman.
Top Performances – Men
- Ryan Murphy set a career high of 283.55 on the 1-meter board, and finished second in that event and the 3-meter contest. Andrew Lewarchick took third on both boards.
- Luke Hutchinson was second in the 1000 free.
- Josh Dellorto came in second in the 200 free. Peter Andreev was fourth in that race. Dellorto also had a second place finish in the 100 free.
- Bryce Wyma and Owen Zant were third and fourth respectively in the 100 back.
- Ben Gabbey was third in the 100 breast.
- Gabriele Sasia was second in the 50 fly. Eric Weng was fourth. Sasia took second in the 100 fly as well.
Relays – Women
- Anna Scovill, Poleena Kovalaske, Emily Sullivan, and Lauren Johnson took first in the 400 medley relay.
- Kovalaske, Johnson, Misha Neal, and Scovill won the 400 free relay.
Relays – Men
- Danny Sivak, Ben Gabbey, Gabriele Sasia, and Josh Dellorto claimed second in the 200 medley relay.
- Peter Andreev, Bryce Wyma, Sasia, and Eric Weng came in second in the 400 free relay.

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Cleveland State University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams came up short against Horizon League opposition Friday evening inside Flames Natatorium.
The CSU men dropped a 158-141 decision to host UIC. The Viking women dropped a matchup to host UIC (206-91) as well as fellow league foe IUPUI (165.5-128.5).
For the second straight dual meet, sophomore Jack Krusinski led the way for CSU by winning a trio of individual events.
Krusinski posted a dominating showing in his first individual event, winning the 100 breaststroke by two full seconds, as he finished in 56.46 seconds. He then won the 200 breaststroke by over two seconds (2:07.62) while fellow Viking Tyler Stevenson was the runner-up (2:09.99). Krusinski finished off his day with his closest race in the 200 IM, but he still came out on top in 1:53.36.
Senior Jack MacDonald finished in first place in both of his individual events. In the 50 free, he tied for first with classmate Dominic Poletta, as the two touched the wall in identical times of 21.05 seconds. In the 100 free, MacDonald finished in first place by himself (46.31) while Poletta was took third (47.60).
Senior Matthew Martin and junior Dominik Niedzialek each added a first-place finish. Martin did so in the 100 butterfly (50.10) while Niedzialek did so in the 500 free (4:38.22). Martin was the runner-up in the 200 fly (1:52.51) while Niedzialek took second in the 100 backstroke (50.77).
Junior Alec Bowie (1650 free – 16:35.77), freshman Nathen Eberhardt (200 free – 1:42.51) and junior Timothy Kubacki (200 back – 1:49.66) each posted a runner-up finish on the day.
The CSU men took second in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. In the medley, Kubacki, Stevenson, Martin and MacDonald finished in 1:32.81 while Poletta, Stevenson, junior Ryan Sedlak and MacDonald finished the free relay in 1:23.90.
Junior Alana Cartwright led the way for the CSU women by sweeping the breaststroke events.
She won the 100 in 1:06.47 and claimed the 200 in 2:24.72, winning the latter event by over two seconds.
Sophomore Agnes Bahr and junior Shaw Barney both finished second in races, with the former doing so in the 100 fly (59.51) and the latter in the 200 IM (2:12.04). Junior Erica Henrichsen finished second in 3-meter diving with 241.95 points.
The CSU women notched third-place finishes in a pair of freestyle events—senior Gabriella Marinelli in the 200 (1:56.14) and freshman Rachel Contich in the 1650 (17:43.03).
Marinelli also anchored CSU’s third-place 200 free relay squad. Barney and Cartwright swam the lead legs while freshman Abby Allison swam the third leg. The quartet finished in 1:39.97.
Sophomore Stephanie Sipple, junior Sule van der Merwe and senior Chuchu Yang each were the fastest Viking in a race they swam. Sipple finished the 200 fly in 2:12.99, van der Merwe finished the 200 back in 2:10.49 and Yang stopped the clock in the 100 back in 1:00.81. Yang also was right behind van der Merwe in the 200 back in 2:10.77.
Yang, Cartwright, Barney and Marinelli were the top CSU team in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:49.16.
CSU will be right back in action Saturday as it competes against the same set of teams in dual action.
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Cleveland State University men’s swimming & diving team came from behind and clinched a win over host UIC on the final event in a Horizon League dual Saturday afternoon inside Flames Natatorium.
The CSU men claimed a 153-147 win over UIC. There was just a one-point gap entering the final event—the 400 freestyle relay—meaning the team that won the last race would claim the team victory.
The CSU women came up short against UIC (188-112) while also dropping a neutral-site matchup against IUPUI (156-142).
“This weekend put us to the test,” head coach Hannah Burandt said. “I’m proud of how our women excelled consistently across the two days with heart and grit. Our men came out flat Friday but turned on the heat and came out firing on all cylinders Saturday. We are constantly learning and growing and ready to be put to the test again in two weekends.”
With the dual result hanging in the balance, senior Dominic Poletta, junior Ryan Sedlak, senior DJ Arslanian and senior Jack MacDonald combined to cruise to victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet’s winning time of 3:03.40 was nearly five seconds ahead of the runner-up.
The Viking men had actually trailed 130-115 with three events remaining, but CSU came storming back for the victory after winning the final three events.
Senior Matthew Martin got the comeback started with his win in the 100 butterfly in 50.40 seconds. Then junior Timothy Kubacki and sophomore Jack Krusinski finished 1-2 in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:02.99 and 4:06.09, respectively.
Martin and Kubacki were two of the seven Viking swimmers to win a race Saturday. In addition to the 400 IM, CSU also finished 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke and 50 freestyle.
Krusinski (57.82) and senior Tyler Stevenson (58.21) were 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke and also finished second (26.26) and third (26.65) in the 50 breaststroke.
Poletta (21.19) and Sedlak (21.43) were 1-2 in the 50 freestyle.
Junior Dominik Niedzialek won the 1000 freestyle in 9:36.68 and also had two runner-up finishes. He was second in the 50 backstroke (24.28) and the 500 freestyle (4:41.08).
Arslanian and MacDonald won the 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle in 23.29 seconds and 46.51 seconds, respectively.
Kubacki, Krusinski, Martin and MacDonald had won the first men’s race of the day by claiming first in the 400 medley relay in 3:22.46.
A trio of Viking women won races Saturday while competing against the two HL foes.
Junior Shaw Barney won the 50 butterfly in 26.68 seconds before taking second in the 100 fly in 59.32.
Junior Alana Cartwright won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.47 and also took third in the 50 breast in 31.50 seconds. Classmate Gracyn McQueary was right behind in the 50 breast (31.51) while Sophia Davis finished in 31.86.
Sophomore Agnes Bahr won the 400 IM in 4:34.07 in the final individual event of the day.
Freshman Rachel Contich notched runner-up finishes in two freestyle events Saturday. She was second in both the 200 (1:57.13) and the 500 free (5:10.90). Senior Gabriella Marinelli was right behind Contich in the 200, finishing third in 1:57.40.
Juniors Lexie Kostelnik and Sule van der Merwe took third (10:37.99) and fourth (10:41.24) in the 1000 free.
Senior Madi Jaszcz (50 free – 24.91), Marinelli (100 free – 54.04) and senior Chuchu Yang (100 back – 1:00.28) each added a fourth-place finish.
Cleveland State will resume action on the final weekend of the month with a pair of duals in Michigan.

CHICAGO – IUPUI women’s swimming and diving split their meets on Friday (Jan. 10) against Cleveland State and UIC. The Jags beat the Vikings 165.50-128.50 but lost to the Flames by a score of 117-183.
Lauren Thompson had the best night in the pool for the Jaguars, picking up wins in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, as well as a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Teammate Cassia Snyder wasn’t far behind with a win in the 50 Free and third-place finish in the 100 Free. Snyder was also part of second-place teams in both the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay.
The Jaguars women’s team will be back in action on Saturday, again taking on Cleveland State and UIC, beginning at 11 a.m. ET.

CHICAGO – For the second-straight meet, IUPUI women’s swimming and diving beat Cleveland State but fell to the host UIC on Saturday (Jan. 11). The Jaguars beat the Vikings by a score of 156-142 and lost 123.50-176.50 to UIC.
The Jags won five individual events with Lauren Thompson winning both the 50 and 100 back, while Cassia Snyder won the 50 free, Maggie Hatfield won the 100 free and Alexis DeAngelis won the 50 breaststroke.
The Jaguars next meet will be on Friday, Jan. 24 against Oakland as IUPUI will get a preview of the Horizon League Championships venue.
