Christou, Siskos Lead 22-Strong European Championship Roster for Greece

2024 Olympic silver medalist Apostolos Christou leads the 22-swimmer roster for Greece for the upcoming European Championships, as announced by the Hellenic Aquatics Federation.

Christou secured an Olympic silver medal in Paris in 2024 in the 200 backstroke, touching in 1:54.82. He has also found plenty of success at these championships over the past four years, winning the 50 back (24.36) and finishing runner-up in the 100 back (52.24) at this meet in 2022. In 2024, he backed that performance up with a pair of wins in the sprint backstrokes in 24.39 and 52.23, respectively.

Another big name on the Greek roster is Apostolos Siskos, who is the fastest 200 backstroker in the world this season, with a 1:54.12 at the Acropolis Swim Open in May. Similar to his fellow countryman Christou, Siskos came away with some hardware at these championships in 2024, taking silver in the 200 back in 1:55.42.

Greece also brings back a pair of champions from the 2024 European Championships in Apostolos Papastamos, who won the 400 IM, and Stergios Bilas, who won gold in the 50 butterfly. However, he will face steep competition in that event if he wants to stand atop the podium again.

This meet will also feature former NC State standout Andreas Vazaios, the 32-year-old, who is coming off a solid showing at the Greek National Open Championships, where he finished 2nd in the 50 free (22.29) and the 100 free (49.23). He also added a bronze-medal finish in the 50 fly in 23.89.

Greece’s roster also includes seven women, those being Nikoletta Pavlopoulou, Georgia Damasioti, Anna Vlachou, Andromachi Tasakou, Anna Ntountounaki, Artemis Vasilaki, and Eleni Antoniadou.
