Cameron McEvoy Named 2018 Commonwealth Games Ambassador

Australian swimming star Cameron McEvoy has been named as an official ambassador of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The international event, which takes place every 4 years, is slated to be held on the Gold Coast, Australia, McEvoy’s hometown. The 22-year-old will be helping to promote the multi-sport, international event, which sees athletes from Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales, among many other nations, compete across at least 10 different sports.

After Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement on Tuesday, September 6th, two-time Rio bronze medalist McEvoy stated, “I have grown up on the Gold Coast and it is the only city I have known and I have lived in, so to have the opportunity to broadcast not only to the city of the Gold Coast but to Queensland, Australia and the other 1.5 billion people that are going to tune into the Games and to show them my sport… is something special.”

“You don’t often get a home Commonwealth Games or at home international sporting event in swimming so that to me will be really exciting.”

McEvoy joins hurdler Sally Pearson as an ambassador for the event which Palaszczuk says is running ‘on time and on budget.’ Of the pair of high-profile athletes, Palaszczuk says, “They will be two of the bright faces of the largest event to be held in this country this decade and the part they will play in inviting the world to our shores cannot be underestimated. They both bring unique blends of sporting calibre, personality and humility to their ambassadorships and there is no doubt they will make the roles their own.”

The 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games are scheduled for April 4th-15th. Tickets are expected to go on sale during the latter half of 2017.
