California high school state champion Anita Qian has announced her verbal commitment* to swim at Cornell University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Cornell University to continue my academic and athletic careers! I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, as well as Coach Joe and Coach Brandon, for always believing and supporting me. I also want to give a special thank you to Coach Pat and Coach Noah for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO BIG RED!
A rising senior at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, Qian has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Rancho San Dieguito, where she primarily specializes in sprint butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle.
Qian is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw her make sizable improvements in the freestyle and butterfly events. She dropped nearly 11 seconds in the 200 free, over a full second in the 100 fly, and about a tenth in both sprint free events.
Qian did not have a singular target meet this past season, instead registering her current best times across various club meets throughout the year. At the SI Winter Age Group Championships in December, she clocked 23.87 in the 50 free and season bests of 56.21 and 2:05.99 in the 100 and 200 back. The Armada Senior Tri Meet in February saw her swim 1:51.72 in the 200 free, and a few weeks later she clocked 54.57 in the 100 fly and 51.48 in the 100 free at Speedo Sectionals – Oceanside. Her current bests of 55.95 in the 100 back and 2:04.53 in the 200 back came from May and April of 2025, respectively.
On the high school scene, Qian has qualified to represent Torrey Pines at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State Championships each year of her career. This past May brought her best showing to date, as she won her first state title by leading off the victorious 200 free relay in 24.04, helped the 400 free relay to sixth with a 52.34 leadoff, and finished 14th in the 100 fly (55.89).

A Division I program, Cornell competes in the Ivy League, with the women’s team placing sixth out of eight teams at this past season’s conference championships. Qian’s current lifetime bests would have qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 100 fly and the ‘C’ final in the 100 back, setting her up to be an immediate contributor, with two full seasons of training still to go before her first conference meet.
Qian joins Amy Chai, Abby Lee, Mae Windari, Sarah Carrico, Anna Nishnianidze, and Kate Lucyshyn in committing to Cornell’s class of 2031 so far.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
