The Cal Poly men’s and women’s swimming and diving program won all 32 events to sweep UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon on senior day. The men’s team captured a 172-110 victory while the women’s team won 171-108.
Cal Poly sophomore diver Riley Saufley set the program record on the 1-meter board with a final score of 272.70. The previous record was held by current sophomore diver Nevada Schultz who set the record in 2017 with a score of 266.15. Saufley’s dive qualified him for NCAA Zone E Regionals in Flagstaff, Ariz. hosted by Northern Arizona March 5-7.
On the women’s side in diving, Mustang sophomore Makenzie Kamei won both the 1-meter and 3-meter. She finished with a score of 268.20 on the 1-meter and 295.50 on the 3-meter, good for the second best dive in the MPSF this season. Both dives qualified her for NCAA Zone E Regionals.
Three Cal Poly men’s swimmers (junior Zack Allen, junior Dominic Dalpiaz and senior Nolan Newland) and three women’s swimmers (seniors Bonnie Diamond and Elise Goetzl and sophomore Hailey Houck) each recorded a pair of victories against the Banana Slugs.
Allen won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.58) and 100 butterfly (49.97), Dalpiaz picked up wins in both the 100 breaststroke (51.55) and 100 free (45.55) and Newland captured both the 50 free (21.69) and 500 free (4:34.52).
Diamond won both the 200 free (1:53.65) and 200 IM (2:08.70); Goetzl delivered wins in both the 50 free (24.62) and 100 free (53.41) and Houck picked up wins in both the 1000 free (10:38.28) and 200 butterfly (2:06.12).
“It’s always nice to win senior meets,” Mustang head coach Tom Milich said. “Let the seniors win at home in front of the fans. It was a great experience for them.”
Sophomores Jordan Payne and Amelia Feick teamed up with freshman Sascha Keir and junior Emily Imfeld to win the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.32.
Dalpiaz and Allen paired with sophomore Brian Whittington and freshman Tony Casaccia to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.59.
Cal Poly also won swept the 400 freestyle relay on both the men’s and women’s side. On the women’s side, Imfeld and Keir teamed with sophomore Emily Peters and freshman Emelia Piccininni to win with a time of 3:34.27. The men’s team of Casaccia, Whittington, Allen and Dalpiaz won with a time of 3:06.92.
“I thought we swam pretty well today,” Milich said. “We had some great swims on the 400 free relay. The kids raced well and had some pretty good times so I’m pretty happy with where we are.”
