YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Ball State University women’s swimming and diving team swept the relays and diving events while picking up several other individual wins as it went on to claim a 211-88 victory Friday night at Youngstown State.

Multiple swimmers and divers contributed to various first-place finishes as a strong all-around performance gave the Cardinals their first team win of the year. They previously finished second at the Indiana Intercollegiates Meet to open the season.

It was a very fast start for BSU as the Cardinals swept first, second and third in the 200 Medley Relay to open the meet. A team of Audrey Schank, Abbie McCarter, Makenna Bottorff and Peighton Gilbert claimed first with a score of 1:46.79. Katie Walker followed up that performance with a win in the 1000 Free on a time of 10:43.36. Ball State got another two wins in a row when Schank finished first in the 100 Back (27.91) and Alex Bader won the 100 Breast (1:04.37).

Rachel Bertram owned the diving boards at the meet as she swept both the 1M and 3M on the night. She scored a 296.48 on the 3M and 267.37 on 1M. Both scores were good for zone cuts. Teammates Caitlin Locante and Madison Gatzlaff helped Bertram sweep the top three spots on the 3M with scores of 232.50 and 205.27, respectively. Locante also earned a third-place result on the 1M.

“It was a solid day for us with some good efforts,” said diving coach Nick Gayes. “We got a nice sweep on 3M and Caitlin threw a reverse 2.5 for the first time in competition, so that was a nice highlight to start the weekend.”

The 200 Medley Relay wasn’t the only one the Cardinals won as Gilbert, Alexa McDonald, Anne Vormohr and Apsara Sakbun combined to win the 400 Free Relay (3:35.49) to end the night. Gilbert also finished first in the 50 Free (24.57), McDonald earned a victory in the 200 Breast (2:26.81) and Sakbun won the 200 Back (2:07.39).

Walker earned her second win of the night in the 500 Free (5:12.74) and Sophie Bader joined her sister Alex with Ball State’s final individual win of the competition in the 100 Fly (56.68).

The Cardinals are in action again Saturday afternoon when they travel to Buffalo for a Noon ET dual. Live results are available via MeetMobile.
