arena Swim of the Week: Addison Madden Sets Manitoba Provincial Record In 13-14 50 Back

Swim of the Week is brought to you by arena, a SwimSwam partner.

Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.

Manta Swim Club’s Addison Madden claimed a piece of Manitoba swimming history last weekend at the Edmonton Open (LCM), becoming the province’s first female swimmer in the 13-14 age group to break 30 seconds in the 50 backstroke.

Madden, 14, won the women’s 50 back final in a time of 29.95, beating 17-year-olds Mikayla Laurin (30.04) and teammate Halle West (30.38) head-to-head while lowering the 14-year-old Manitoba Provincial Record ocf 30.05, set by Mackenzie Glover in 2012.

Madden came into the meet with a lifetime best of 30.59, set last July at the ManSask (Manitoba and Saskatchewan combined) Provincial Championships, and she had lowered that to 30.30 in the prelims in Edmonton.

The performance moves Madden into 17th all-time in the Canadian girls’ 13-14 age group (14th among 14-year-olds), putting her within nine-tenths of the National Age Group Record held by Jade Hannah.
