Buffalo Area Aquatic Club (BAAC) Buffalo, NY

Join a growing, competitive, athlete-centered program and help swimmers ages 6–18 build skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of the sport. We are looking for a progressive, goal-oriented coach who will help provide BAAC a competitive edge in the region while continuing to create excellent advancement opportunities for our swimmers.  You will work closely with our Head Coach and staff to deliver high-quality practices, support meet success and create a positive team culture.

Compensation: Annual salary of $25,000–$45,000, based on qualifications and experience. Job-related education and travel expenses are covered or reimbursed.

About the Role: Guided by BAAC’s Head Coach, the Assistant Coach is responsible for helping to design and implement the seasonal training program for our competitive groups. About 30% of their duties involve supporting the administrative operations essential for running a successful swim club. The remaining 70% is spent actively on the pool deck, working with various training groups to create an engaging, challenging, and growth-oriented environment.

  • Developmental Program (approx. ages 5-12: This group forms the club’s foundation, beginning with Learn to Swim and progressing through six levels. In addition to teaching kids to swim, participants learn to do all four strokes legally and are introduced to competitive swimming.  Most swimmers complete this program in 18 to 24 months. Practice sessions are offered 3 days per week and are 30 to 60 minutes depending on level.
  • Juniors (approx. ages 6–12): Swimmers in this group have advanced through our Developmental program.  Through this group legal strokes are technically refined, strong practice habits are established, and kids learn how to be a great teammate. This group currently practices 6 days per week, up to 90 minutes per practice.
  • Intermediate & Seniors (approx. ages 11–18): These groups are designed for goal-oriented swimmers who consistently seek a higher level of performance. The group includes Team Record Holders; LSC Champions, and qualifiers to Eastern Zones, Sectionals, Futures Championship, and Winter Junior Nationals. This group currently practices 6 days per week, up to 2 hours per practice. These groups typically run consecutively each night.

Key Responsibilities: As BAAC’s Assistant Coach, you will:

  • Work with the Head Coach to build training plans aligned with BAAC’s coaching philosophy.
  • Plan and lead group practices, including in-water and dryland workouts.
  • Deliver fun, engaging, and challenging skills-based training sessions.
  • Attend assigned swim meets where swimmers you coach are participating.
  • Participate in staff and Board of Director meetings as requested by the Head Coach.
  • Collaborate with the coaching staff to set benchmarks that measure swimmer improvement and expand opportunities across the team.
  • Support meet operations with the Head Coach: oversee individual and team entries, submit entries, and post relevant meet information to the team website.
  • Track swimmer goals, training statistics, and monthly attendance; hold individual seasonal goal meetings and additional check-ins as needed.
  • Assist with new member recruitment and responding to new family inquiries.
  • Assist the Head Coach and Board of Directors with team administration, including scheduling hourly coaches (and tracking hours for payroll), identifying alternate practice/pool sites as needed, managing USA Swimming memberships in coordination with the club’s billing staff.
  • Support other tasks requested by Head Coach and Board of Directors that lead to the success of the club.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experienced coaching background with a competitive USA Swimming program or highly competitive High School swim team.
  • Experience with SportsEngine (formerly TeamUnify) is a plus; if you are new to it, you must be able to learn quickly.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to provide daily feedback and constructive critique to all athletes in a practice environment.
  • Ability to meet all USA Swimming certification and coaching requirements (e.g., CPR, Safety Training for Swim Coaches, USA Background Check, Athlete Protection Training, etc.).
  • A passion for swimming—and genuine excitement for teaching and developing athletes.

About BAAC: Buffalo Area Aquatic Club is Board governed non-profit, 501(c)(3), USA Swimming competitive swim club.  The club was originally founded in 1960 as Amherst Swim Club and has also been known as UB Amherst Swimming, Inc. (UBAM).  The club uses two primary pools. Our competitive groups train in an Olympic-sized pool in Alumni Arena at the University at Buffalo’s North Campus (Buffalo, NY). Our Developmental Program trains at Sweet Home Middle School—near UB North Campus—providing the benefits of a smaller setting. On occasion, we also train at other local pools in the UB area.

BAAC was the 2025-26 Niagara LSC Age Group Overall Champion and was the runner up in the Open Championship. Prior to this season, BAAC won the LSC Age Group Championship in 2022–23 and was runner-up in 2024–25, and 2025-26.   BAAC won Niagara LSC Small Team Division honors for five consecutive years prior to 2018. The team has grown from fewer than 50 swimmers to 200 swimmers, and our goal is continued growth and progress across the program.

Buffalo—affectionately known as The City of Good Neighbors—is shedding its Rust Belt image and features a new waterfront, great restaurants (not even counting the wings), and affordability that ranks among the best in the U.S. You will rarely commute for more than 20 minutes, and proximity to Toronto puts a major metropolis within easy driving distance.
