Virginia Tech Adds Multifaceted Finnish Talent Eetu Autio to 2027 Recruiting Class

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Turku, Finland native Eetu Autio has committed to join the Hokies of Virginia Tech for the fall of 2027.

Im excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech! I want to thank God, my mom, coach @aija.hakala , all the friends who helped throughout the process. Finally i want to thank @sergiolopezmiro for the opportunity and @subicule for trusting me since day one. GO HOKIES

Autio represented his home country at the European Aquatics Championships (SCM) in December, where he set three of his fastest-ever times. He notched two of his best IM times, touching in 55.77 in the 100 IM (37th), and in 1:59.93 in the 200 IM (32nd). Autio also impressed with his 200 fly performance, clocking 1:57.14, a career best for 27th place. He also finished 21st overall in the 400 IM in 4:15.64.

Two months earlier, Autio raced at the West Junior/Senior Short Course championships, where he posted his fastest short-course 400 IM time of 4:13.70 and put his mid-distance freestyle ability on display, clocking 3:51.14 in the 400 free.

Autio also boasts the best short-course time in the 800 free, 8:00.59, from the Finnish Grand Prix in November. In December, he also raced at the Finnish Short Course Swimming Championships, where he showcased his breaststroke with a best short-course 200 breaststroke time of 2:14.96.

Best Times Converted to SCY:

Event SCM SCY Conversion
200 IM 1:59.93 1:48.04
400 IM 4:13.70 3:48.55
200 Free 1:51.81 1:40.72
400 Free 3:51.14 4:24.15 (500 Free)
800 Free 8:00.59 9:09.24 (1000 Free)
200 Fly 1:57.14 1:45.53
200 Breast 2:14.96 2:01.58

The Hokie men finished 6th at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships a season ago.

Autio’s converted times would have finished 29th in the 400 IM, 34th in the 200 fly, and  36th in the 500 free.

Autio’s repertoire is very well-rounded with plenty of mid-distance events at his disposal, and a nice addition to a solid IM group in Blacksburg.

Sophomore Eli Martin currently boasts the fastest 200 and 400 IMs on the team in 1:46.65 and 3:48.37, respectively. Autio would still have one year with Martin remaining on the roster, giving Virginia Tech added depth in the IM group.

The versatility with the added fly, free, and breast skills is valuable to the Hokies, giving Autio a number of possible lineups to maximize his potential and fit for the Virginia Tech men.

After losing Carles Coll Marti last season, the Virginia Tech men will be able to use the diverse talent that Autio brings to the table.

Autio joins Tommy Lussier in the Hokies’ 2027 recruiting class.
