The 2026 Geneva International Challenge is nearly upon us, with long course action kicking off Friday, January 23rd.
As in the past, this year’s edition of the annual competition has attracted talent both domestically and from abroad, giving us some potentially electric matchups this weekend.
Olympic medalist Roman Mityukov of the host nation is slated to compete, while Belgium is sending the likes of national record holders Florine Gaspard and Roos Vanottordijk.
Italy will be in the mix, with Anita Gastaldi, Linda Camponi and Lisa Angiolini among its contingent.
The Netherlands will also be represented, with Olympic medalists Caspar Corbeau and Tes Schouten headed to Geneva.
25-year-old Schouten is set to make her 2026 racing debut, expected to be among the women’s 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke fields.
Schouten dropped out of last year’s World Championships, citing health issues.
As she stated on social media in April of 2025, “Since last September, I have been struggling with my health. It started with nerve pain on the left side of my face, which subsided after 2-3 weeks. In November, these symptoms returned, but it became so unbearable that I was admitted to the hospital. In the end, I spent 11 days in the hospital due to nerve pain, loss of power and function on the entire left side of my body. I am still not back to my old self and experience daily issues in the form of extreme fatigue and pain.
Schouten’s last time racing appears to be the 2024 Olympic Games, where the Dutch national record holder earned bronze in the women’s 200m breaststroke event.
