17-Yr-Old Phillipson Notches Dutch Junior Record In 100 Backstroke

2025 DUTCH SC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Dutch Short Course Championships kicked off last night from The Hague and, although big guns such as Marrit Steenbergen and Nyls Korstanje aren’t competing, there was still a plethora of talent taking to the SCM pool.

The men’s 100m backstroke saw Giovanni Phillipson get it done for gold, posting a time of 52.72 to get to the wall first.

That represented a new Dutch Junior Record for the 17-year-old, as well as a new lifetime best. His former career-swiftest result rested at the 53.46 produced just two months ago, so he hacked over half a second with tonight’s podium-topping effort.

Raf Hendriks touched in 52.75 as the silver medalist and Hendrik van der Leest placed 3rd in 53.07.

Jason van den Berg was too quick to catch in the men’s 50m breaststroke, turning in a time of 26.52 for the gold.

That held a healthy advantage over the rest of the field, with Bram Zwetsloot next to the wall in 27.08.

Luca Janssen rounded out the podium in 27.26.

Van den Berg’s best-ever outing remains at the 26.12 he registered in Rotterdam this past October.

23-year-old dynamo Tessa Giele dove in for the women’s 100m IM, where she found success with a solid swim of 59.18.

That checked in as the sole time of the field under the 1:00 barrier. Mare Schallenberg secured silver in 1:00.25 while Sterre Hendriks also landed on the podium in 1:01.24, good enough for bronze.

Giele placed 5th in this event at last year’s Short Course World Championships, where she clocked a lifetime best of 57.69. She is the Dutch national record holder in the SCM 100m and 200m butterfly events.

Giele was also in the water for the 50m fly on day one of the competition, although she was forced to settle for bronze behind winner Kim Busch and runner-up Britta Koehorst.

Busch turned in a time of 25.76, with Koehorst right behind in 26.00. Giele clocked 26.10 as the bronze medalist.

The same trio of swimmers landed on the podium in the women’s 50m freestyle as well, although in a different order.

Koehorst got it done for gold in 24.24, a new PB by.06, while Busch hit 24.45 for silver. Giele was a hair behind in 24.48 for her third medal of the evening.

Finally, 26-year-old Thomas Jansen beat the pack to claim gold in the men’s 200m fly.

The 400m IM national record holder produced a gold medal-worthy time of 1:55.80, slicing .06 off his former lifetime best of 1:55.86 notched at the 2023 edition of these championships.

Tiago Fonseca was next to the wall in 1:56.02, while van der Leest’s time of 1:58.54 garnered him the bronze medal.
