It was quite a memorable final swim meet in the 11-12 age group for Parker Wheeler.
A 12-year-old who swims in Georgia for SwimAtlanta, Wheeler nearly set two National Age Group Records at the Georgia Senior State Championships in early December in Athens.
Wheeler first swam a time of 1:44.55 in the 200 free, which was just 27 one-hundredths behind the all-time best mark of 1:44.28 set in 2019 by Thomas Heilman in Virginia.
The rest of the top-five behind Wheeler are Winn Aung (1:45.43 in 2015), Matthew Magness (1:45.52 in 2013) and Luka Mijatovic (1:45.64 in 2022).
Later, Wheeler clocked a time of 4:41.34 in the 500 free, which was only eight one-hundredths back of the top time set by Mason Turner in 2019 in Iowa.
The rest of the top-five in that event are Nick Silverthorn (4:41.54 in 2008), Mijatovic (4:43.12 in 2022) and Nicholas Caldwell (4:44.87 in 2006).
Still, Wheeler now ranks 2nd all-time in both events shortly before he turns 13 at the end of the month and moves up to the 13-14 age group.
From the team perspective, SwimAtlanta won the boys’ title with 622 points, while the SwimAtlanta girls made it a sweep by winning with 798.5 points.
