Bob Bowman‘s pro group was coming off of a 24-day training camp at altitude in Colorado Springs at the US Open, which seemed to work in their advantage. Even though Bowman’s goal for the camp was to get them a lot of aerobic work, he said they never went above 7k per practice and that he wanted to make sure their speed was still intact.

That seemed to be the case in Austin last week, as many of the shorter distance-oriented athletes saw success, including Simone Manuel and Chris Guiliano, who both won events.

I love when excellent coaches get a chance to talk about their setup and thought process. I would be interested to know in how the volume compares to mid 2000s days? 7k 2x a day is a lot but for a coach who is know for volume heavy workloads, I wonder if he has even backed down a touch?

I was honestly surprised to hear Regan say she’d never done that much before. I’d assumed Bob was a volume monster.

Thank you for all these interviews at US Open, Coleman. The format is concise and allows us a quick and insightful snapshot into the mindset of the athlete (or coach). Well done!
