Jack Aikins and Daniel Diehl, the respective 1st and 3rd place finishers in the 200 back at the 2025 U.S. Nationals, failed to A final in the same event at the U.S. Open.
Diehl clocked a 2:00.84 in his heat, missing out on a top eight berth by two tenths of a second. Aikins, who swims for UVA, stopped the clock in 2:01.98.
The 23-year-old Aikins holds a lifetime best of 1:54.25, when he won nationals and qualified for his first World Championship team. Diehl’s PR comes from the same night, when the NC State swimmer went 1:55.08 to just miss out on the team.
The ACC duo were seeded 4th and 5th coming into the meet with these times. This morning’s result was Aikins’ slowest since 2023. Tonight, they will have each other as stiff competition in the B final to improve.
International Worlds finalist Hubert Kos and Blake Tierney led the way in this morning’s prelims. Several NCAA stars put up strong morning efforts to get into the top 8, including JT Ewing, Tommy Hagar, and Tristan Jankovics.
