Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez Leads Record-Breaking 200 IM Pack At SC Euros

2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The men’s 200m IM final was among tonight’s agenda at the 2025 European Short Course Championships and the medal-contesting race brought about multiple national records.

Leading the pack was two-time long course World Championships medalist Hugo Gonzalez of Spain, with the 26-year-old throwing down a big-time personal best of 1:51.39 en route to gold.

Splitting 24.36/27.87/32.19/26.97 to get to the wall first, Gonzalez registered the sole time of the field under 1:52.

Italy’s Alberto Razzetti claimed silver just over half a second back in 1:52.05 and Berke Saka nailed a time of 1:52.25 to round out the podium.

As for Gonzalez, his result this evening slashed significant time off the former Spanish national record of 1:52.11. That time was put on the books by Carles Coll Marti, the 200m breaststroke gold medalist here, from the 2024 Spanish Club Cup.

Entering this competition, Gonzalez’s lifetime best in this 2IM event rested at the 1:52.65 logged last year, so he dropped well over a second off his previously best-ever outing.

Saka’s bronze medal-worthy time was also a Turkish national record, taking over the 1:53.16 he notched in the semi-finals. As such, he cleared the 1:53-barrier for the first time in his career.

Finally, although he finished off the podium in 6th place, Finnish swimmer Ronny Brannkarr notched a time of 1:53.98 to lower his previous national record of 1:54.55, also from the semi-finals.
