Day three of the 2025 Russian Short Course Nationals brought the heat, with 21-year-old Egor Kornev continuing his dominating display of speed.

After already having clocked a new national record of 21.73 in the men’s 50m butterfly, Kornev put up a monster personal best in the 100m freestyle.

In tonight’s final, the St. Petersburg swimmer busted out a gold medal-worthy performance of 44.99.

That beat the field by over one-and-a-half seconds, with Ivan Girev earning silver in 46.55 followed by Dmitry Zhavoronkov who rounded out the podium in 46.59.

As for Kornev, he split 10.09/11.41/11.80/11.69 to obliterate his previous career-swiftest mark of 45.52 logged during the semi-finals of the event at last year’s Short Course World Championships. There in Budapest, the speedster ultimately clocked 45.58 to place 5th overall.

This evening’s effort came within .05 of the Russian national record of 44.94 retired Olympian Vlad Morozov put on the books during the 2018 World Cup.

Kornev’s time inserts him into slot #5 among the world’s all-time best men’s SCM 100 freestyle performers and just the 5th man ever to break the 45-second barrier.

Didn’t really push his UWs, that was rather Chalmersesque. He should be the next guy at 46.9 or faster LCM.

Nobody did in that line-up. His UWs were amongst the longest in the field

This guy is a real deal. Need some more international experience but he’s getting there and a definitive medal threat in 50 and 100 free

He had a very good and under the radar year last year. Would not be surprised to see him as the next guy under 47.

Wasn’t expecting this versatility from him. Does he have serviceable breast?
