It was a historic day for the Warren Central High School swimming programs at the Mississippi Class II state championships.

Central had never won a state swim title in any gender, but left the pool with two as the girls and boys each won titles.

The girls’ team were co-champions along with West Jones High School, while the boys’ team finished in first by 20 points over runner-up Pearl River Central High School.

Girls’ Recap

Warren Central trailed West Jones by four points going into the 400 freestyle relay, but the team of Kara Rowe, Addison Billings, Avery Greer and Ella Opperman won that event in a time of 4:08.10 — 11 seconds ahead of West Jones — to force the tie at the top of the team standings.

Central head coach Terry Wong told The Vicksburg Post that the West Jones team let his squad take the state title trophy home in a great act of sportsmanship.

“They didn’t have two trophies and West Jones, the coach and the girls, said we could take it to have it at the school,” Wong said. “The MHSAA is going to send them one. They were such great sportsmen. We’ve played with those girls for three years now and the relationship between the two teams is phenomenal. We cheer for our teams and for each other, and both groups of girls embraced one another. There were a lot of tears.”

The only individual winner for Central was Greer, who took the 200 free in a time of 2:03.53.

Central’s team of Sicily Smith, Rowe, Greer and Billings won the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:04.69.

The 200 free relay was won by the West Jones team of Aubrey Sherman, Reese Yoder, Marilyn Names and Kara Darby, which came in with a time of 1:51.69.
