The official venues for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics have been revealed. For the upcoming Summer Games, there will be 36 Olympic and 23 Paralympic sports, hosting over 800 competitive events. In total, there are more than 40 venues that highlight all that Los Angeles, Southern California, as well as the United States has to offer.
In 2017, Los Angeles originally bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the Games to Paris for 2024 and Los Angeles for 2028. This will be the third time the city of Los Angeles has hosted the Olympics, as it did back in 1932 and 1984.
The city of Angels offers many advantages, such as leveraging existing venues, which minimizes costs and the environmental impact that comes with building new venues. This allows for a focus on sustainability and community engagement. Having pre-existing venues will prioritize the athletes, the competition, and the fan experience, as these venues will be high-quality and ensure a seamless event from opening to closing.
The aquatics venues include the 1932 Pool in Exposition Park Zone for diving, SoFi Stadium in the Inglewood Zone for swimming, and Belmont Shores (Long Beach Waterfront) for open water swimming. The Long Beach Aquatics Center will be used for artistic swimming and water polo at the Olympics and then swimming at the Paralympics.
Similar to the 2024 Paris Olympics, which held several events outside of Paris and even had surfing hosted halfway around the world in Tahiti, there will be two sports that are not contested in Los Angeles or even in California. The other location for the Olympics will be in Oklahoma, which is just over 1,000 miles away from Los Angeles. These will be softball and canoe slalom, which will be held in Oklahoma City at Devon Park. This change is due to the Los Angeles area’s limited venue capacity and the desire to utilize pre-existing and high-quality venues.
Breaking the tradition from any other Olympics, venues will be allowed to have corporate sponsor names attached to them. This decision came earlier in August between LA28 and the International Olympic Committee. The two venues with corporate sponsorships thus far are the Comcast Squash Center at Universal Studios and the Honda Center.
Compared to the original bid for the 2024 Games in 2017, the majority of the venues being used for the 2028 Olympics remain the same, though there are some differences.
Pool swimming was previously slated to take place at a temporary pool at USC’s Dedeaux Field, but it will now take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.
Basketball is now slated for the Intuit Dome after it was scheduled for the Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) in 2017, while Artistic Gymnastics and Trampoline will move to Crypto.com Arena after the original bid had it being hosted at the The Forum.
There are also some sports added to the Olympic program that were not on the schedule when the 2017 bid was made: Cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse and squash. Flag football and lacrosse will take place at BMO Stadium (Exposition Park), cricket will run at the temporary Fairgrounds Cricket Stadium, and squash will be held at the Comcast Squash Center at Universal City Squash Center.
Baseball/softball were proposed to be included in the program in the 2017 bid, and though they weren’t contested in Paris last summer, they’ll be back in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.
