Day five of the 2024 Olympic Games delivered one of the most thrilling races so far as Hungarian world record holder Kristof Milak battled fiercely against French swimmer Leon Marchand in the men’s 200m butterfly final.
Leon Marchand delivered a spectacular performance, finishing with an astonishing last 50m split of 29.8 seconds. Marchand touched the wall first with a time of 1:51.21, securing gold in a dramatic finish. Milak, despite his impressive effort, settled for silver with a time of 1:51.72. The race was a testament to Milak’s endurance and skill, but Marchand’s powerful finish clinched the top spot.
Canadian Ilya Kharun also shone brightly, earning bronze with a time of 1:52.80. Kharun’s performance marked a notable achievement as he secured a podium finish amidst fierce competition.
Further down the line, Switzerland’s Noe Ponti made headlines by setting a new national record. Ponti, who was previously committed to NC State, qualified as the 3rd seed from the heats with a time of 1:54.77 and improved to 1:54.14 in the semifinals. In the final, he tied his Swiss record once again with a time of 1:54.14, finishing in 5th place. Ponti’s achievement not only highlights his exceptional talent but also signifies a significant milestone for Swiss swimming.
The men’s 200m butterfly final showcased some of the best performances in the sport, with Marchand’s dramatic victory and Ponti’s record-setting swim standing out as key highlights of the day.

Noe Ponti, who secured bronze in the 100m butterfly at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will be competing in the same event at the Paris 2024 Games. His strong performance in the men’s 200m butterfly final, where he set a new Swiss record, has set high expectations for his upcoming race in the 100m butterfly.
