On the final day of the 2024 Richmond Futures, Emerson Callis started off the session by completing a sweep of the women’s IM events. After winning the 400 IM on day 2, Callis swam a 2:16.95 200 IM to comfortably take the win over East Carolina Aquatics’ Lily Willis (2:18.20) and NCAP’s Gwyneth Frick (2:19.49). Callis owns a PB of 2:16.76, set back in May at the TYR 18 & under Spring Cup.
NC State commit Ian Stutts won the men’s 200 IM in 2:03.83, beating out Gabe Nunziata (2:03.83) and Simon Bermudez (2:04.00). Stutts, who competes for Marlins of Raleigh, has been as fast as 2:02.92.
The women’s 50 free was anyone’s race, but 16-year-old Emilianna Gonzalez got her hand on the wall first in 26.30. Only .16 separated her from the rest of the podium, as Isabel Iwasyk (26.44) and Louisa Wendt (26.46) followed closely behind, and only .56 separated 1st through 7th. Gonzalez’s swim was .01 off her PB of 26.29, while both Iwasyk and Wendt snuck under their respective PBs of 26.50 and 26.51.
Sean Setzer took the win in the men’s 50 free, swimming a 22.60. He was followed by Albert Smelzer (22.74) and Noah Powers (23.00). Setzer, a UNC commit, owns a PB of 22.42, which set back in May.
100 fly champ Sarah Rodrigues won the 200 back, swimming 2:11.74. Rodrigues was just off her PB of 2:11.04, which she set at US Trials last month. Alyssa Sagle (2:13.11) took 2nd, holding off a late charge from Sadie Buckley (2:13.27), who placed 3rd.
The men’s 200 back saw Paul Moody win in 2:02.22, followed by Krystoph Gorski (2:03.14) who out touched John Troy (2:03.17). Moody was right on his PB, which he set in prelims with a 2:02.11.
The second and final distance session of the meet was highlighted by Kylie McMurray, the 800 free champ, as the lone swimmer sub 17 in the 1500. She swam a 16:59.38, off her 16:52.11 PB set at March’s NCSA Spring Championships, but enough to get the win by 15 seconds over second place Neala Klein (17:14.34).
Hudson DeGroote additionally swept the long distance events, swimming the 800 free in 8:14.53 and claiming his 4th win of the Richmond Futures. DeGroote was about half a second short of his PB 8:14.16. Second went to William Charlton, who dropped 10 seconds (8:19.63) to out touch Wilson Tuttle‘s 8:19.89.
Day 4’s relay was the 4×100 medley, and NCAP lead the way for both the men and women. The NCAP women won easily in 4:13.97, with Alyssa Sagle, Gwneth Frick, Allison Witdoect, and Maren Conze splitting 1:02.32/1:11.65/1:01.33/58.67, respectively.
The NCAP men placed 1-2 for the second time this meet, with their A-team of Jt Schmid (56.36), Lleyton Arnold (1:01.88), Rian Graham (53.10), and Josh Howat (50.57) taking the win in 3:41.91.
