15 Year Old Shareef Elaydi Drops 1:58.92 200 Fly, #11 15-16 All-Time

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

TUESDAY EVENING HEAT SHEETS

15 year old Shareef Elaydi of Santa Clara Swim Club (SCSC) posted a best time in the men’s 200 butterfly en route to a ‘B’ final win on night 1. Elaydi’s time moved him up to #11 all-time in the 15-16 age group and he still has another summer to move up the rankings.

Thomas Heilman holds the National Age Group record with a 1:53.82 that he swam at the 2023 World Championships. Elaydi’s time notably sits him just ahead of Dare Rose who swam a 1:58.97 in 2018. Rose represented the US last summer at 2023 Worlds in the 50 and 100 butterfly events.

Elaydi’s time from today marked his first time cracking the 2:00 mark as his previous best was a 2:00.38 that he swam in March at the age of 14. That time was the 2nd fastest in the 13-14 age group ever sitting only behind Michael Phelps who holds the national age group (NAG) record with a 1:59.02 from 2000.

His time from today was also faster than he was at last month’s US Olympic Trials as he swam a 2:01.17 for 43rd then. His time from today would have been 21st in prelims as it took a 1:58.37 to earn a (swimoff) for a spot in semifinals.

Elaydi is also scheduled to swim the 100 fly later this week in Irvine, an event he also stands as #2 all-time in the 13-14 age group. Only Thomas Heilman was faster but Elaydi will now look to make waves in the 15-16 age group in that event as well.

This kid just turned 15 like a month ago! It seems a but unfair to compare with times others might have achieved as a 16 year old. Do we have fastest 15 year old times?

Looks like it’s fourth behind Phelps (1:54.92), Heilman (1:56.52), and Carson Foster (1:58.47). Monster swim!
