Benjamin Ho Narrowly Misses 13-14 NAG Record in California

  3 Braden Keith | February 18th, 2013

Just as it looked like the American logjam in the backstrokes could be clearing out a little – with many of the stars aging, and Ryan Lochte spending some time swimming butterfly for the moment – another one comes along. PEAK Swimming’s Benjamin Ho missed a National Age Group Record in the 200 back by a tenth of a second today in Santa Cruz at a meet hosted by the Cabrillo Threshers.

Ho swam a 1:46.66 in prelims of the 200 back, just missing the 1:46.56 set by Georgian Ethan Young at the Georgia State Champs (USA-S) in December. Were it not for that swim, this time would’ve been exactly .01 under Ryan Murphy’s old record coming into this season.

Ho also swam a 49.86 in the 100 back at this meet.

Ho was named last season as one of the outstanding swimmer award winners for the Pacific LSC. Earlier this season, he already took down the Pacific Swimming record for the age group in the 200 back with a 1:48.

The SWIMS database shows that he has been training year-round since he was just 6 years old; first with PASA until 2010, and then with PEAK since then. He won’t age up until later in the spring, meaning he should get at least a few more shots at dropping a tenth and breaking this record.

Full, live results for the meet are available here.

How about something on Daniel Chang, 14, and a 56.69/2:02.68 breaststroker? He’s after the NAG records in both.

Don’t you think that’s kind of rude?
