Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands kicked off her 2019 European Short Course Championship campaign with a bang on Wednesday morning, soaring to a new Championship and Dutch National Record in the women’s 100 backstroke prelims.
Toussaint fired off a time of 55.26 from the fourth and final heat, eclipsing her Dutch mark of 55.58 set just over a week ago at the ISL European-derby in London. She has now broken the record three times (and tied it once).
It also takes down Katinka Hosszu‘s meet record of 55.42 set in Netanya in 2015.
In addition to the new records, the 25-year-old jumps up from eighth to fourth in the event all-time.

Hosszu, who won gold at the 2017 edition of this meet in Copenhagen over Toussaint’s silver, opted out of the backstroke events this week, giving Toussaint what appears to be a clear path to gold. Russia’s Maria Kameneva was the only other woman under 57 in the prelims, clocking 56.95.
