UK-based Derventio Excel held its annual September Short Course Meet over the weekend, which saw clubs such as Royal Wolverhampton, Northampton, and Deepings take to the pool to establish some baseline racing heading into the SCM season.
Among the dozens of competitors at the meet were several British youngsters who made some noise over the summer at elite international junior meets. Jacob Whittle and Sophie Yendell of home club Derventio Excel made multiple appearances on Saturday, as did Royal Wolverhampton’s Matt Richards and Northampton’s Edward Mildred.
For his part, Richards took the 2019 European Junior Championships title in the men’s 100m freestyle this summer, blasting a lifetime best and British Age Record of 48.88. He also reaped silver in the 200m free in a new PB of 1:47.23, as well as collected bronze as a member of GBR’s 4x100m free relay in Kazan.
Whittle was also a member of that bronze medal-worthy 4x100m free relay, producing the 2nd fastest split of his squad in 49.93 in the final. He also nailed a sub-50 100m free individual time of 49.97 in the semi-finals at just 14 years of age.
Mildred was another member of that 4x100m freer relay at Euro Jrs, but his big individual swims came at the European Youth Olympic Festival. There in Baku, Mildred won the 200m free in 1:49.33 and took silver in the 200m fly in a new British Age Record and lifetime best mark of 1:58.64.
Finally, for Yendell, the 17-year-old Derventio swimmer came within tenths of scoring a medal at this year’s European Junior Championships, clocking 27.16 to place 5th in the women’s 50m fly.
With their past long course performances under their belts, these rising stars are ready to make some moves in the 2019/20 season, beginning with this ‘shake off the racing cobwebs’ starting meet at Derventio. Here’s how the 4 youngsters fared on Saturday, September 21st.
