Date Shift For 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games

The 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games were awarded to Buenos Aires, Argentina back in 2013, but details are still in flux even with the multi-sport competition fast-approaching. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board decided today that the dates of the 2018 edition of the quadrennial event will be moved to accommodate weekend competition.

Buenos Aires originally announced September 30th – October 12th as the timeframe for the Games, but the newly announced dates are now October 6th-18th in order for two weekends to be included.

“It is hoped we will be able to reach more people in that time,” said IOC Presidential spokesperson Mark Adams. (Inside the Games)

2018 represents the 3rd edition of the Summer Youth Olympics and will signify the first version to take place outside of Asia. 2010’s was hosted by Singapore, with 2014 held in Nanjing. Also unique to the Buenos Aires Games is that, for the first time in Olympic history, gender equality on the sports program will reign, with 1893 women and 1893 men set to compete.

Buenos Aires is also in competition with Santiago, Chile to host the 2023 Pan American Games with both cities having submitted their respective applications last month.
