Adam Barrett Blasts New 100 Fly Short Course British National Record

While competing on day 2 of the 2016 World Cup in Chartres, France, Loughborough swimmer Adam Barrett broke the British National Record in the men’s short course 100m butterfly event.

Heading into this first stop of the World Cup Series, Barrett’s personal best was the 50.05 he clocked back in 2013 at the Scottish Open Nationals, a mark which stood as the NR until today’s performance. In Chartres, Barrett dipped beneath the 50-second threshold for the first time in his career, stopping the clock at a super swift 49.31 to finish with the silver medal behind South Africa’s Chad Le Clos.

A comparison between Barrett’s 2013 performance and that of today’s outing shows the 24-year-old took his Chartres swim out faster by .15 of a second and was still able to hold on to his opening speed, closing in a final 50m of 26.13. That back half split is over a half second faster than his 2013 performance.

With his silver medal-winning performance today, Barrett raked in a cool $1,000, while also becoming the first British man to ever clock a 49-point short course 100m butterfly.

Also in Chartres, Barrett finished 7th in the men’s 100m freestyle (48.64) and 5th in the 50m freestyle (21.72).
