Spain Still Seeking Its First Gold Of The 2026 European Junior Championships

2026 EUROPEAN JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

With just one day of action remaining at the 2026 European Junior Swimming Championships, the Neutral Athletes remain at the top of the overall swimming medal table, having amassed 26 pieces of hardware.

Their breakdown includes 10 golds, 6 silvers and 10 bronze to own more than half the medals earned thus far by runners-up Great Britain and Italy.

The former resides as the #2 nation across this competition, having earned 5 golds, 2 silvers and 4 bronze for a total of 11 pieces of hardware behind the Neutral Athletes.

Italy has also displayed a strong showing, rounding out the podium as it stands today with 4 golds, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals.

However, the nation of Spain is underperforming compared to the 2025 edition of these championships, where the country placed 3rd in the medal table when all was said and done. There in Slovakia, Spain earned 14 medals, including 4 golds, 5 silver and 5 bronze, while this time around the Spaniards are still seeking their first gold of the competition.

They’ll have multiple chances this evening, although the boys’ hopes are riding solely on Luca Hoek‘s shoulders. He is the lone male to have qualified for tonight’s finals, hoping to repeat as champion in the 100m freestyle.

Spanish girls will see Lucia Gregoria Martinez vie for gold in the 100m breast, along with Carlota Rodriguez in the 50m fly. The 200m IM final brings Maria Santana, as Irene Ciercoles will do her best to reap gold in the 100m back. The girls’ medley relay is also in the mix for a medal.
