74 Female Swimmers, Divers Named to 2013 Capital One At-Large All-District Team

74 swimmers and divers have been named to the 2013 Women’s Capital One All-District Team, surpassed only by tennis (87) in the “At-Large” categorization that includes athletes from 14 different sports.

– Women’s Bowling
– Women’s Crew
– Men’s and Women’s Fencing
– Women’s Field Hockey
– Men’s and Women’s Golf
– Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics
– Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey
– Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse
– Men’s and Women’s Rifle
– Men’s and Women’s Skiing
– Men’s and Women’s Swimming
– Men’s and Women’s Tennis
– Men’s Volleyball
– Men’s and Women’s Water Polo
– Men’s Wrestling

Athletes are nominated by their Sports Information departments, with each college or university allowed to nominate just three men and three women from the 14 sports listed above to compete with others in their Division and Geographic location for this honor. The rules state that an athlete must be a “starter or important reserve,” a sophomore in eligibility, have participated in at least 50% of their team’s contests, and have a 3.30 GPA.

Honorees on the first team All-District list will then go on into a pool with all of the other districts for All-American honors, voted on by a committee.

The biggest names, swimming-wise, on this list include Georgia Olympian Shannon Vreeland, who was a five-time First Team All-American this season, and also a part of the NCAA Championship winning 800 free relay that set the American, NCAA, and U.S. Open Records at SEC’s.

Other familiar names include Tennessee Olympic Trials finalist Kelsey Floyd, Olympic silver medalist and NCAA Champion Elizabeth Beisel; Purdue sprinter Lauren Gustafson, Virginia Tech diver Logan Kline, two members of the Division III NCAA Championship team at Emory (Anna Dobben and Kristine Kassl); Minnesota’s Jessica Plant; UCLA national championship qualifier Anna Senko; Eastern Michigan distance ace Briana Emig; and top Navy swimmer Laura Gorinski.

Deserving special recognition is the Asbury women’s team in the NAIA. They finished 9th at this year’s NAIA National Cahmpionship, and not only were all three of the women’s nominees from their athletics department swimmers, but all three of them earned All-District honors.

For both Beisel and Floyd, who are international-level swimmers and NCAA Champions, this is a second All-District honor. It is Vreeland’s first.

Below is a list of all swimmers who earned this prestigious award, sorted by school.
