Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Jack Tarte of Mountainview, California has announced his commitment to swim and study at The College of William & Mary, starting in the fall of 2026. He trains year-round with the Sierra Marlins and attends Vista del Lago High School.
Tarte confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam, and included this quote:
Failure and setback are not signs of weakness, but the very foundation of success.
The high school senior is a butterfly and freestyle specialist who has shown a strong trajectory over the course of his first three high school seasons. All of his best times in his main events were produced in the last 12 months.
Tarte’s target meets for the 2024-25 season were the Speedo Winter Sectionals in December, followed by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) High School Sectionals and State meets in May.
At the Winter Sectionals, Tarte made the ‘A’ final of the 200 fly, where he stopped the clock at 1:49.67 to take sixth overall. He also swam to an 18th-place finish with a best time of 50.10 in the 100 free, in addition to taking 24th in the 200 IM in 1:55.46. His only other swim that earned him a finals spot was the 200 free, where he notched a season-best 1:41.63 for 17th.
After another six months of intensive training, Tarte really broke through at the CIF Sectionals, where he set his current career bests in the 50-200 free and 100 fly. He was the runner-up in the 100 fly, posting a personal best of 49.42 in prelims before chopping nearly a full second off that mark to 48.65 in the final. His only other individual event was the 200 free, where he shattered his prior best by over a second, hitting 1:40.00 for fourth.
Tarte was crucial on Vista del Lago’s relays at the meet, too, providing a 21.39 leadoff on the 200 free relay that was fifth and a 46.50 leadoff on the 400 free relay that hit the wall 10th.
While he was not quite able to maintain his top form at State, he did post another pair of sub-50 results in the 100 fly, logging 49.21 in prelims before swimming a time of 49.36 for 12th in the ‘B’ final. He put his hand on the wall 36th in the 200 free, recording a time of 1:43.19.
- 50 Freestyle: 21.39
- 100 Freestyle: 46.50
- 200 Freestyle: 1:40.00
- 100 Butterfly: 48.65
- 200 Butterfly: 1:49.67
The William & Mary men, led by head coach Nate Kellogg, placed 5th at this year’s Coastal Athletic Association Conference Championships. They scored a total of 410 points, finishing 75.5 points behind 4th-place Towson University.
Tarte will have an immediate impact at the conference level, as his current bests in both butterfly events would have made the ‘B’ final last season. His 200 fly is not too far off what was required to make the ‘A’ final, as his time is just 0.72 shy, with another full season to improve before arriving on campus. Times of 20.44, 45.18, and 1:39.06 were needed to get a second swim in the freestyles, and the 50 free will likely be his third event given the event schedule of the meet.
According to the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Tarte would have ranked third in the 200 fly, fourth in the 200 free, fifth in the 100 fly, and seventh in both the 50 and 100 free. Juniors Ashton Temme (47.77) and Rhett Cosgrove (1:48.35) led the way in the flys, while sophomore Aiden Bond was fastest in the freestyles at 19.64, 43.66, and 1:36.20.
Tarte joins Kyle Spaman, Parker Saltsman, and Brayden King in publicizing their commitments to William & Mary’s Class of 2030.
