For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mid” to B finalists, and “Down” to C finalists.

Indiana were the headline act of this morning, placing 10 of their 12 scoring swimmers for tonight into ‘A’ finals, which should see them break into the top two at the end of tonight. They hold the top seed in the 100 free (Liberty Clark) and 200 fly (Alex Shackell), and are seeded for 267 individual points. Shackell won the 100 fly on Day 2, while Clark has won the 200 free and placed 2nd in the 50 free already at the meet.
This was always set to be a big day for Indiana, and the Hoosiers duly delivered. Along with their top seed in the 400 free relay, they should close out the meet on a high. Michigan will be too far away to catch, with eight ‘A’ finals of their own including three in the 200 IM, but OSU’s failure to put more than one swimmer into an ‘A’ final this morning will come back to bite them. The Buckeyes have 12 scoring swims in finals tonight, but seven of those are ‘B’ finals and four of them ‘C’ finals. Wisconsin also only managed a pair of ‘A’ finalists; Lucie Delmas in the 200 fly and top-seeded Maggie Wanezek in the 200 back.
USC will remain in 5th despite making six ‘A’ finals tonight, while Purdue will solidify their hold on 8th after moving up three places last night. They are set for 160.5 points, thanks to six finals, three swimmers set to score in the mile, and the 9th seed in the 400 free relay.

Did Shackell only swim two individual events at this meet?
she swam the 100 back
Lots of exciting races to look forward to tonight:
Bellard/Shackell 2 fly
4 free relay
Go BLUE- bring it home!!!!!!!
Is IU in 2nd or 3rd?
Seems like currently in 3rd, but projections have them getting 2nd
If you look at the bottom point chart, they’re in 3rd but have more points than #2 OSU.
Yes, should have been in 2nd – thanks for spotting
