Day two of week two during the NCAA Division I conference championship wrapped up this evening, and the number of Automatic Qualifiers doubled on both sides of the meet in just one day.
The women have more qualifiers because there are more women’s conferences including the Mountain West and the American League that only have women’s teams earning Automatic Qualifying spots. The numbers are also inflated because the Big Ten and the Ivy League are racing their women’s meets this week and their men’s meets next week.
Thursday saw 19 women earn automatic NCAA berths across eight different events while the men earned 12 qualifications across five events. Five of the men’s qualifications and two of the women’s came from the 50 yard freestyle.
The women had 11 mid-major qualifiers with the Ivy League seeing every conference champion earn an NCAA berth. Princeton’s Eleanor Sun was the only member of the conference to swim faster than last year’s invite time with her 1:55.62 in the 200 IM coming in about a second under the 2025 Invite time of 1:56.69.
The Mountain West also saw three individual qualifiers in three events. Nevada’s Scarlet Ferris swam under the 2025 Invite Time of 51.87 in the 100 fly, touching in 51.34 for the gold medal. Wyoming’s Tara Joyce also came in under the invite time, swimming 1:44.43 in the 200 free to sit four tenths under the 2025 Invite of 1:44.74.
On the men’s side, IU Indy’s Yassin Abdelghany had the highlight swim of the night, blasting a monster 18.91 in the men’s 50 freestyle to earn the Horizon League Title, conference record, and an NCAA qualification. He also dropped nearly four tenths from his previous best time of 19.30 from November of 2024.
Exactly half of the men’s qualifiers came from mid-major programs with one from the Atlantic-10, one from the Big East, one from the Horizon League, two from the Patriot League, and one from the Summit League.
