The first prelims session of the 2025 World Cup – Toronto went off this morning, with many of the stars out in full force.
For tonight’s finals session, there’s only one scratch: Ireland’s Ellen Walshe has dropped the 100 IM from her schedule, an event she was seeded 8th in after clocking 59.83, just over a second off her national record of 58.55 from December.
Walshe is going all in for the 200 butterfly final, where she’s seeded 7th with a time of 2:08.73. She claimed silver in that event in Westmont and bronze in Carmel, breaking the national record at both meets.
Her withdrawal opens the door for Canada’s Taylor Ruck and Neutral Athletes “A” swimmer Anastasiya Shkurdai, who posted matching 59.91s to rank equal 9th. According to the start list published by World Aquatics (see below), the final will feature nine swimmers. That means a swim-off was not conducted for the eighth and final spot—Ruck will take lane eight, while Shkurdai will swim out of lane zero.
Ruck’s time marked her first-ever venture under the one-minute barrier, while Shkurdai’s best remains the 57.59 she recorded during the 2020 ISL season. Ruck will also feature in the 50 free final, where she’s seeded 3rd after a 23.93 in prelims, less than a tenth off the 23.87 she swam in Westmont last week. She also swam the 50 back this morning, logging 26.76 for 12th place.
It will be Shkurdai’s only final of the night after finishing 18th in the 50 back (27.24).
