For those unfamiliar with the terminology: “Up” means a swimmer who is in the A-final, as those swimmers cannot fall lower than 8th barring a DQ. “Down”is what we’ll call teams in the “B” final, who are bound from 9th-16th places.
Scoring for a 16-place meet: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11/9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, and then doubled for relays.
Virginia is taking advantage of their strength on the first day, especially in the 500 freestyle, with 12 total qualifiers into tonight’s final. If they can come even with Virginia Tech after tonight, that will be huge going into day 2 of this meet, where the Hokies should have their highest scoring day.
North Carolina, despite some injuries, is still showing a lot of depth in this meet, with 10 total finalists in three events tonight.
Note that diving is all taken care of already; below are the scores through all three events of diving, as well as one day of swimming, followed by up-downs.
