Winter Juniors finalist Owen Lin has verbally committed to the application process* at Harvard University for the fall of 2026. He confirmed the decision on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond grateful to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Harvard University where I will continue my academic and athletic career! I would like to thank God, along with my family, friends, and coaches who have guided and supported me throughout this journey. Thank you to everyone at GSA and ECA for shaping me into the swimmer that I am today. Finally, thank you to Coach Tyrrell and Coach Dozier for giving me this amazing opportunity! I cannot wait to see what this next chapter holds! GO CRIMSON!!
The North Carolina native is a senior at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro, where he has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his freshman year. A versatile threat in the water, he also trains year-round with Greensboro Swimming Association, excelling at butterfly, IM, and sprint freestyle.
Lin has been on a steady improvement curve throughout his career, but he took things to a whole new level in 2025, demolishing his personal bests across all of his top events. His most sizable drops came in the butterfly and IM, where he went from 48.90 to 47.84 in the 100 fly, 1:49.69 to 1:45.38 in the 200 fly, and 1:50.44 to 1:45.73 in the 200 IM. He also made some strides in the freestyles, improving from 1:39.81 to 1:38.21 in the 200 free, 44.67 to 44.38 in the 100 free, and 20.44 to 20.36 in the 50 free.
At the 2025 Winter Junior Championship – East, Lin made the ‘A’ finals in the 200 fly and 200 IM, placing sixth and seventh respectively, both in his current personal bests. He also advanced to the ‘C’ final of the 100 fly for 18th, also in a PB, and swam a season-best 20.58 to take 39th in the 50 free. A three-time qualifier for the meet, it was his first year reaching any final, as his best prior placement was 40th.
On the high school front, Lin capped his prep career as the NCHSAA 8A state champion in both the 200 free and 100 fly, winning both events in his current lifetime bests. The title run was a long time coming; as a junior in 4A, he finished fourth in the 100 fly and seventh in the 200 free, and as a sophomore in 3A he was runner-up in both events. As a freshman, also in 3A, he placed second in the 200 free and third in the 100 fly.
Beyond major meets, Lin’s other standout meet of the 2025 season was the Southeastern Meet of Champions in March, where he set personal bests in the 50 and 100 free. He racked up five top-three finishes, touching second in the 50 free, 100 free, 50 back (23.83), and 100 fly, and third in the 200 free. His 200 free best came a week later at a separate club meet.
- 50 Freestyle: 20.36
- 100 Freestyle: 44.38
- 200 Freestyle: 1:38.03
- 100 Butterfly: 47.84
- 200 Butterfly: 1:45.38
- 200 IM: 1:45.73
A Division I program, Harvard competes in the Ivy League, with the men’s team placing second out of eight teams at last season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 20.12/44.19/1:42.86 in the 50/100/200 free, 49.20/1:52.46 in the 100/200 fly, and 1:47.49 in the 200 IM. Lin’s PBs would have scored in the ‘B’ finals of the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM, and the ‘C’ final of the 200 free, making the butterfly events and 200 IM his most likely collegiate event lineup.
On the team’s projected 2026-27 depth chart, factoring in fellow recruits and graduations, Lin is projected to rank first in the 200 IM, fourth in the 200 fly, sixth in the 200 free, seventh in the 50 and 100 free, and eighth in the 100 fly, setting him up to be an immediate contributor in dual meets, with relay potential down the line.
Lin joins Botond Kovacs (backstroke) and George Dovellos (free/fly) in committing to Harvard’s class of 2030.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.

Great kid and great family! Looking forward to seeing how he does in and out of the pool.
No surprise here. He will do well in and out of the pool!
Congratulations Owen (and Harvard!), thanks for pushing my son during your high school meets!
