Siobhan Haughey Named Michigan’s Freshman Of The Year

Michigan swimmer Siobhan Haughey has been named MGoBlue.com’s ‘Freshman of the Year’, placing a spotlight on the aquatic athlete after her tremendous first season as a Wolverine.

Beating out fellow nominees from Michigan basketball, water polo, gymnastics and rowing, Haughey, a Hong Kong native, came away with the award in light of her undeniable impact in her Big Ten Championships debut.

Contributing to Michigan winning its overall 15th Big Ten team title, its first since 2004, Haughey collected 3 individual titles at the meet. As well as serving her team in spades across the relays, Haughey scored the individual victory in the 200 IM in a pool, meet and Big Ten Conference Record-breaking time of 1:54.97. This was followed by an additional pool and meet record in the 200 freestyle (1:43.51), as well as a win in the 100 freestyle (47.71).

Haughey was named ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ at those Big Ten Championships and finished up her debut conference meet with All American honors in the women’s 200 freestyle. She placed 5th overall at the 2016 NCAA Women’s Championships in a time of 48.30.

Look for Haughey in Rio, as she’ll be competing for Hong Kong at the 2016 Olympic Games.
