Nico Cecchi Opts To Remain In-State With FSU (2023)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Nico Cecchi has announced his commitment to Florida State University, beginning this upcoming fall. His decision keeps him in-state, as he currently attends West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida. Cecchi’s older sister also attends Florida State, but does not swim.

Cecchi shared his commitment on Instagram:

Cecchi trains and competes year-round with Southwest Stars Swim Club, also located in Winter Garden. He swims a variety of events at a high level, but has especially done well with sprints. He most recently competed at the Florida Swimming Senior Championships, where he won the 100 backstroke in a best time of 48.43. In addition, he logged best times in the 100 fly (48.54) and 100 free (45.18), finishing 6th and 2nd, respectively.  He capped off his meet with a best time in the 50 free, going 20.39 both as a lead-off leg and in prelims of the individual event.

In February, he got some long course racing under his belt at the Speedo Sectionals meet in Orlando. He earned his highest finish at 3rd in the 100m backstroke, where he stopped the clock in a best time of 57.27. He put up two more top-8 finishes in the 50m and 100m free, finishing 7th (24.13) and 6th (52.74) overall. His freestyle times were less than a second shy of the best times he set at Futures last summer.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 free – 20.39
  • 100 free – 45.18
  • 100 back – 48.43
  • 100 fly – 48.54

The Seminoles placed 6th out of 12 teams at the 2023 ACC Championships in February. Their top individual finisher was Yordan Yanchev, who earned 3rd in the 500 free. Cecchi is just outside of scoring range in the 100 back and 50 free, as it took times of 47.58 and 19.94 to advance to finals this year.

Junior Mason Herbert was the team’s top finisher in the 100 backstroke with his 6th place performance (45.93). The 50 free was relatively weaker this year for Florida State, with sophomore Jokubas Keblys posting the highest finish at 16th (19.90).

With his commitment, Cecchi joins Mehdi El Aoufir, Jack Stokvis, Andrew Rich, Mathew Iverson and Matthew Koziol. The majority of the class is from Florida, with Iverson and Reich being the outliers.
