USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Sam Davey has announced his commitment to McKendree University for this upcoming fall. Davey is from Waukee, Iowa, and is set to graduate from Waukee Northwest High School this spring. His older sister, Gillian Davey, also swims collegiately at the University of Kentucky.

Davey trains year-round with Des Moines YMCA Marlins, and specializes primarily in backstroke. He owns a Winter Juniors qualifying time in the 200 back, and finished 66th in the event at Winter Juniors in December with a season best time of 1:51.17.
After Winter Juniors, Davey went on to compete at the Iowa High School Boys State Championship. He placed 5th in the 200 IM, where he recorded a personal best time of 1:53.14 in prelims. Additionally, he took 6th in the 100 backstroke with a personal best time of 51.05 in prelims.

McKendree is an NCAA Division II program located in Lebanon, Illinois. The men are coming off of a 3rd-place finish at this season’s Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championships and NCAA Division II Championships.
Davey’s best time in the 200 backstroke would have made him the team’s 4th-fastest performer this past season. Patryk Rozenek was the top performer with a 1:45.72 to take 4th at GLVCs. Joining him under 1:50 this season was Abram Hagedorn, who logged a 1:49.65 to finish 13th. Both are currently sophomores, meaning Davey will get the chance to train with them for two years.
Joining Davey in McKendree’s incoming class of 2027 is Christian Davidson, Spencer Meyers, Mason Enthoven, and Miles Fleischer. This class is heavy on mid-distance to distance freestyle, with Davey being the outlier as a backstroker.
