Canadian Taryn Weatherhead has announced her commitment to continue her academic and athletic careers at Wisconsin, beginning in the fall of 2026.
Weatherhead shared the news on social media, writing, “I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! Thank you to my coaches, teammates, and family for all the support and a special thank you to the coaches at Wisconsin for this incredible opportunity! GO BADGERS!!”
The British Columbia native is currently attending Penticton Secondary School and trains year-round with Penticton Kisu Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in butterfly and the 100, 200, and 400 freestyle.
She’s been as quick as 59.96 and 1:00.72 in the 100 fly (SCM/LCM), 2:13.27 and 2:14.27 in the 200 fly, 56.82 and 57.71 in the 100 free, 2:01.23 and 2:04.82 in the 200 free, and 4:16.10 and 4:19.24 in the 400 free. While her 100 and 200 LCM free personal bests were set in the summer of 2024, all of her other current bests come from 2025.
Weatherhead competed in five events at Canadian World Championship Trials back in May, where she made the ‘B’ finals of the 100 fly (1:00.72), 200 fly (2:16.09), and 400 free (4:19.24). Among junior swimmers in the 13-18 age group at the meet, she was fourth fastest in both fly events and fifth in the 400 free.
It wasn’t her first time competing at that level, as she also made the ‘B’ final of the 100 fly at Olympic Trials a year prior, finishing 12th overall and sixth fastest among 13-18-year-olds.
When converting her best times to short course yards, they come out to:
- 100 Butterfly: 59.96/1:00.72 (54.01/53.44)
- 200 Butterfly: 2:13.27/2:14.27 (2:00.06/1:58.44)
- 100 Freestyle: 56.82/57.71 (51.18/50.54)
- 200 Freestyle: 2:01.23/2:04.82 (1:49.21/1:49.56)
- 400 Freestyle: 4:16.10/4:19.24 (4:52.68/4:50.46)
It’s important to note that converted times are approximations and not 100% accurate, but they help provide perspective on how Weatherhead’s performances could translate to the shorter pool.
A Division I program in the Big Ten Conference, the Wisconsin women’s team is led by first-year head coach Dr. Jack Brown. The Badgers placed fourth out of 14 teams at the 2025 Big Ten Championships and went on to finish 12th at the NCAA Championships less than a month later.
The conference meet scores ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, and it took times of 53.45/1:59.51 to score in the flys and 49.60/1:47.11/4:46.00 in the freestyles. Based on her converted times, she’s right on par with scoring range in the 100/200 fly, while she’s a bit off in the freestyles.
Weatherhead will overlap with the team’s current top all-around butterfliers: freshman Lucie Delmas (53.14/1:57.21) and sophomore Stella Chapman (54.01/1:57.98), along with junior sprinter Hailey Tierney (52.49).
Combined with fellow incoming freshmen Vivian Moulson (54.11/1:56.19), Ainsley Stephan (53.33/1:59.15), and Caroline Wanezek (54.77/2:00.77), Weatherhead will help form the core of the Badgers’ fly group over the next four years.
Also arriving next fall as a member of the class of 2030 are Lindsey Schlegel, Annika Curran, Lilla Wilbur, and Ellie Kayser.
