Australian 14-Year Old Elliott Breaks S8 World Record in 50 Free

Australia’s women’s IPC swimming team is a powerhouse; at last year’s Paralympic Games, their 19 medals were surpassed only by the 25 won by the Americans, and the future looks even brighter at this week’s Australian Age Multi Class Championships in Adelaide.

That’s because 14-year old Maddison Elliott has broken the World Record in the S8 women’s 50 freestyle, swimming a 30.69 in the 11-14 year old girls’ final. That breaks the old mark set by China’s Shengnan Jiang in 2010 with a 30.85.

Elliott was the runner-up in this race at the 2012 Paralympics in London, finishing only behind American Mallory Weggemann. With Weggemann failing to qualify for this summer’s IPC World Championships in Montreal, this 50 free should be a battle between Elliott and the prior record holder Shengnan for gold.
