There are only two scratches to report before night 5 of the 2025 Short Course European Championships, and they’re both from the last place qualifiers of the 200 fly.
German sprint butterflier Angelina Köhler renounced her spot in the women’s semifinals. She finished 16th out of 16 women this morning with a 2:15.48, nearly 8 seconds slower than her 2:07.54 entry time.
Because only 16 women swam the event, Köhler’s scratch doesn’t bump anybody in. Instead, there will be an empty lane in the first semifinal.
Köhler is slated to return to the pool tomorrow as part of the women’s 4×50 medley relay team for Germany. She will presumably swim the butterfly leg, as she established a new national 50 fly record earlier in the meet.
Switzerland’s Ilan Gagnebin also scratched a second swim in the 200 fly, albeit under slightly different circumstances than Köhler. The 21-year-old tied for 17th place with Greek backstroker Apostolos Siskos in the men’s heats. Because Poland swept the top three and the two-per-country final rule goes into effect, the 17th place duo would’ve had to swim off for the 16th spot in the final. Gagnebin curtailed this outcome by scratching the swim-off, allowing Siskos to advance to the semis.
Though not scratches, swim fans tuning into finals should note that Roos Vanotterdijk, Caspar Corbeau, and Arno Kamminga will not compete tonight. All three athletes did not swim this morning, and the former two are confirmed to have caught illnesses.
