Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Wren Smith of Tucson, Arizona, has decommitted from Arizona State and committed to Southern Methodist University for the fall of 2026. In her Instagram post announcing the change, Smith wrote:
“I am so excited to announce that I will be switching my verbal commitment to Southern Methodist University. Thank you to Coach Ozzie, Alice, and Mike and the rest of the coaching staff at SMU for this opportunity. Pony Up!
A senior at Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson, Arizona, Smith has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming and diving team since her freshman year. She also currently swims year-round with Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team, where she primarily specializes in the sprint and middle distance freestyle events.
Since committing to ASU in August, Smith has competed in just three meets: the AZ Fast Patriot Meet in September, the AZ HEAT YUMA Fall Territorial Classic in October, and FAST Winter Lights in November. After finding her rhythm through the first two meets, she dropped time in November, improving from 24.50 to 24.11 in the 50 free, 52.84 to 52.63 in the 100 free, and 1:51.78 to 1:51.33 in the 200 free, though her 500 free personal best of 4:59.65 from February 2024 remains in place.
Smith has competed at the AIA Division II State Swimming and Diving Championships for three straight years, never finishing outside the top 10 in any of her events. As a freshman in 2022, she placed 10th in both the 50 free and 200 free, and as a sophomore in 2023, she took fourth in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free, placements she matched at November 2024’s state meet as a junior with a 5:02.12 in the 500 free and 1:54.58 in the 200 free. She opted not to compete at the meet this season.
In December 2024, she qualified for Winter Junior Nationals – West, placing 76th in the 500 free (5:05.47) and 94th in the 200 free (1:54.12).
Last spring, Smith competed at April’s TYR Pro Swim Series in Fort Lauderdale, where Katie Ledecky and Gretchen Walsh posted in-season world records, touching 58th in the 400m free (4:28.57) and 98th in the 50m fly (32.27). Throughout the summer, she stayed local and earned lifetime bests in the 200m free (2:06.85), 800m free (9:15.53), 100m back (1:15.35), and 50m fly (32.27). She has been as quick as 4:24.28 in the 400m free, which she posted in July 2024.
Top SCY Times:
- 500 free – 4:59.65
- 200 free – 1:51.33
- 100 free – 52.63
- 50 free – 24.11
SMU, led by third-year head coach Ozzie Quevedo, competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Last season, the Mustang women placed 14th out of 15 teams at the conference meet. At the meet, which featured ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals, it took times of 22.41 in the 50 free, 48.72 in the 100 free, and 1:46.56 in the 200 free, and 4:46.77 in the 500 free to score.
While she’s a bit outside of scoring range at the conference level, she projects to be a valuable addition to the team for dual meets. On the team’s current depth chart, Smith would rank fifth in the 500 free, seventh in the 200 free, eighth in the 100 free, and 10th in the 50 free. She could potentially challenge for spots on the team’s freestyle relays down the line if she can approach sub-23 in the 50, sub-50 in the 100, and sub-1:48 in the 200.
Smith joins Anna Bonecka, Emma Hagberg, Ella Houston, Tessa Christiansen, and Emma Bibza in the Mustangs’ 2026 recruiting class.
