For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Norwegian freestyler Sander Sorensen has committed to Stanford University as a part of the 2026 recruiting class for the Cardinal men.

Sorensen represented his home country of Norway at the World Aquatics Championships (LCM) this summer. There, he finished 9th overall in the 200 free, clocking 1:45.78,a new Norwegian Record. He also competed in the 100 free, placing 24th in another Norwegian Record effort.

Earlier in the summer of 2025, Sorensen competed at the European Junior Championships (LCM), where he finished 3rd in the 200 free (1:47.47) and 5th in the 100 free (49.08). He came away with long-course best times in both the 50 free (23.27) and the 100 butterfly (53.63).

In December of 2023, Sorensen won three individual titles at the Nordic Championships (SCM). She set three short-course top times, winning the 100 free (49.31), 200 free (1:47.02), and 400 free (3:50.23).

In April of this year, Sorensen notched a 400 freestyle long-course best of 3:52.26 at the Bergen Swim Festival. He dropped over seven seconds from his previous best from the prelims of that meet at 3:59.42.

Best Times Converted to SCY:

Event LCM SCY Conversion
50 Free 23.27 20.24
100 Free 48.65 42.38
200 Free 1:45.78 1:34.21
400 Free 3:52.26 4:20.23 (500 Free)
100 Fly 53.63 47.05

The Stanford men finished as runners-up to Cal at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships last season.

Based on Sorensen’s converted times, he would have qualified for the ‘B’ final in the 100 free, and the ‘C’ final in both the 200 free and 500 free at those championships.

It’s worth acknowledging that converted times are not an exact science.

Sorensen’s 200 free best is at an Elite level across all levels. The conversion for that 200 free is conservative, and with the pedigree he is currently at,

Sorensen has set many of his best times in the last year, which is a positive sign for Stanford, which finished 206.5 points behind Cal at ACCs.

Sorensen proved himself to be in the upper echelon of elite 200 freestylers with his performance in Singapore at this summer’s World Championships. Now, with the opportunity to consistently race against that high-level competition month to month in the NCAA, that next level of potential for the Norwegian freestyler could be unlocked.

Sorensen joins Davi Carvalho,  Nathan Foucu, Tyler Phillips, Maxwell Stanislaus, Evangelos Efraim Ntoumas, and Enzo Desviat Ruiz in Stanford’s 2026 recruiting class.

Tall and skinny with a fantastic freestyle stroke and a massive potential once he hits the weight room.

Is a 1:45 LCM really the same as a 1:34 SCY?

Of course not.

Swimswam conversions give more advantage to SCY

Connor Ohl is going to Stanford for water polo – not swim.

Assuming he’s 18, the real-time converter gives a 1:31.93 for the 200, which makes much more sense (and 4:18.85 for the 500, which still seems a little slow; it should be around 4:14).

I’d totally agree with that conversion, seems spot on

I think they used scm by accident

Those time conversions value scy so much more. No way a 1:45 swimmer isn’t at the very least 1:32.

1:45.78 should be more like a 1:32 or 1:31

Great pickup

List out all the 1:45 lcm freestylers that have swim in SCY and I’d bet that 99% or more were 1:31 in SCY or better.

I’d bet that they all were between 1:29-1:31 in SCY.

Yeah, its hard to say but I’d shade towards 1:31. Which is a great pickup for Stanford or any team for that matter.
