A dynasty may very well be taking shape right now in Wisconsin Division 2 girls’ swimming and diving.

After never winning a state championship before last year, Whitefish Bay now has two after successfully defending its title at the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 Girls’ State Championships.

Whitefish Bay had winners in eight of the 12 events and swept all three relays to easily win by 108 points over runner-up Edgewood.

With several contributors who are non-seniors, more titles could be in store for Whitefish Bay.

One of those younger swimmers, sophomore Maggie Dickinson, won the 50 free in 23.20 and the 100 back in 53.70. She repeated as champion in both events.

Dickinson also swam leadoff for the 200 medley relay team that won with a time of 1:44.32. Kate Antonelli, Aibhy King and Julia Burrall were the other team members.

Later, Dickinson was the anchor for the winning 400 free relay team, which won in a time of 2:27.06. The other team members were King, Cassidy Shanks, and Anne Dickinson.

Whitefish Bay also took the 200 free relay in 1:37.37 behind the team of Antonelli, Vivian Utschig, Shanks, and A. Dickinson.

The other individuals who won multiple events were Stoughton senior Cheyenne Borroughs and Anne Dickinson.

Committed to Iowa, Borroughs won the 200 IM in 2:07.49 and the 100 breast in 1:03.79. She repeated as champion in the 100 breast and improved on a 2nd-place finish in the 200 IM at last year’s state meet.

A senior who has committed to Indiana, Anne Dickinson defended her titles in both the 200 free (1:47.60) and the 500 free (4:44.09), both in state record times. She crushed the previous 500 freestyle record of 4:47.79 set in 2016, winning the event by more than 30 seconds.

Throughout the meet, Anne Dickinson paid tribute to Grant Freeze, a swimmer from Milwaukee who died of injuries sustained in an Oct. 1 car accident. She had “For Grant” written on her forearm.

“I talked to his mom like a month ago and she said that he was trying to set as many pool records as possible, so I kind of wanted to carry on his legacy, be able to swim as fast as I could for him, because he really loved the sport of swimming,” Anne Dickinson said. “I got it done tonight. That was really special for me.”

Other individual winners were:

  • King, a junior, took the 100 fly in 54.92, repeating as champion in that event.
  • Black River Falls senior Hannah Tubbs, who has committed to Wisconsin-Green Bay, captured the 100 free in a time of 52.76, defending her title in that event.
  • The diving competition was decided by a razor-thin margin. Brown Deer sophomore Elsa Nordstrom won with 421.75 points, barely ahead of Whitefish Bay senior Annika Leinweber, who finished with a score of 421.65.
