Lia Smith, a former diver at Division III Middlebury College was found dead last week near the campus in Vermont. Smith was 21 years old.
According to Vermont Public, Smith was last seen on campus on October 17th, and was reported missing two days later.
Although not actively listed on the team roster, Smith competed in previous seasons for Middlebury College.
Smith was set to graduate as a part of the 2026 class at Middlebury College, where she majored in computer science and statistics.
The Woodside, California native was also a member of the chess and Japanese clubs and was an advocate for transgender rights.
Middlebury College president Ian Baucom released a statement on Facebook on Smith’s passing.
With deep sorrow, I write to share that in a press release issued last night, the Vermont State Police have now confirmed the identity of the person found near campus on Thursday as Lia Smith. They continue to confirm there is no suspicion of foul play.
I have spoken with Liaโs family to express my heartbreak. As president, and far more as a fellow parent, I ache for them. This is a profound loss that nobody should have to endure.
As we mourn, I want to express my deep appreciation for the efforts of our Student Affairs staff who have been offering such compassionate support to Liaโs family, friends, and students across our community. We will continue to support them in every way possible.

This is devastating news. My heart goes out to her friends and family.
So much hatred toward the trans community has been unleashed by MAGA. Why does our country embrace the imposition of pain and hatred on kids who are just trying to find their way in the world? My heart breaks for her family. I was a competitive swimmer throughout my early years and college. The community – at least in my neck of the woods – embraced all, regardless of their identities. As a very shy and awkward straight teenager, I found kids of alternate sexuality to be immensely brave. America has a lot to answer for. How many more suicides will we tolerate?
Deepest condolences to her family and the Middlebury community.
So sad, rest in peace Lia๐
why should she rest in peace? she should rest in righteous fury!
